Wire Communications Cable Splicer

Duties

As a Wire Communcations Cable Splicer, you will perform the following duties:

• Install overhead and underground communication systems for installation activities.
• Determine excavation sites for cable routes.
• Operate equipment such as augers, mobile power units, and/or air compressors to complete installation and repairs.
• Use job plans to determine racking, splice location, and bonding arrangement in underground cable systems.
• Install splice cases, splice closures, and lead sleeves to obtain correct seal and protect cables from moisture.
• Participate in digging inspections to locate, mark and approve buried cable.
• Interpret complex blueprints, engineered drawings, and wire schematics to use in maintaining serviceability of major telephone distribution systems and ancillary equipment.
• Splice communication cables containing 1 to 2800 copper pair, 1 to 96 optical fibers for telephone installation.
• Utilize a variety of power tools such as circular saws, drill motors, and soldering tools to perform telephone lineman duties.

Qualifications

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).  You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Screen Out Element:

Ability to do the work of a Wire Communications Cable Splicer without more than normal supervision, performing a variety of tasks such as repairing and detecting malfunctions of defective aerial, ground, and underground duct cables for telephone communication systems by following instructions in manuals, diagrams, and blueprints; assisting in digging inspections that locate, mark and approve buried cable; operating a variety of motor vehicles and  hand tools to work on wood and steel poles, cut trenches and hang cables by following methods, instructions, and procedures demonstrated and/or outlined by senior cable splicing personnel.

Physical effort:

Work requires frequent bending, stooping, squatting, climbing, pulling cables, and working in cramped or uncomfortable conditions, underground or at moderate heights for extended periods. Frequently lifts and carries 20 to 100 pounds.
Working Conditions:

Works inside and outside in all weather conditions, and occasionally in crawlways under buildings or in attics. Frequently works in tight and confined areas such as communication manholes. Exposed to injuries from use of hand tools, electrical shock while working with cables which may be electrically charged, falls from high places when installing or repairing aerial cables, and noxious fumes in manholes. Work requires using hand tools, coffin-hoist, pipe-pusher, manhole blower, etc. Works in awkward and uncomfortable positions. There is danger of falling from ladders and working near electrical lines (20-30,000 volts) which could result in "death on contact" burns or shocks. Employees are issued, or have available for use, safety shoes, safety glasses, safety helmet, lineman's gloves, work gloves, ear plugs, goggles, rubber blankets, and rubber gloves.
