Welding Worker Training Leader

Duties

Training Instructors. On a regular and recurring basis leads 3 or more advanced Welding students in the performance of on and off site related projects. The incumbent instructs and demonstrates basic and advanced welding processes using electric, acetylene and/or inert gas shielded welding processes for techniques such as Metal Arc (MIG) and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (TIG). Instructs processes for proper planning and layout out of work, positioning and clamping work, pre-heating metal, and processes for maintaining temperature to prevent distortion. Instruction in the use of templates, jigs, blueprints and symbols for welders and other guides to repair, modify or fabricate metal items for all types of equipment. Instructs proper methods of setting up welding equipment, adjustment for amperage, gas flow, preventative maintenance, electrodes selection based on joint requirements, metal identification, and safety. Instruction in processes that include pre-heating, brazing, bead welding, tack welding, flame cutting, pressure welding, and heat treating. Instruction for proper selection of type of rod and size of tip to accomplish weld, maintaining proper speed, flame, motion, tip angle and position to produce desired results working with light, heavy gage and hardened metals using flat, vertical, horizontal, and overhead positions.

In coordination with the Work Programs Officer, Assistant WPO, or other Training Instructors, the incumbent implements a flexible on-the-job and classroom training instruction program, utilizing specific Welding TAR (training achievement record) competencies and on-the-job training to instruct students ages 16 through 24. The incumbent is responsible for implementing, monitoring, and explaining technical and trade techniques and procedures, methods, and safety processes and procedures using trade related equipment for such items as oxygen and acetylene bottles. Instructs students in the use of shop machinery and develops student knowledge and skill in the use of various repair manuals, proper use of trade hand tools, and understanding accepted shop practices, as well as practical application of theories, concepts taught by the Training Instructor. Basic functions include planning the training sessions, obtaining textbooks and educational materials for use in the classroom, conducting the sessions, evaluating the students’ progress and advising and counseling individual enrollees. Additionally, the incumbent provides vocational, education, and personal counseling as related to practical, on-the-job experience and reports back to the Vocational Instructor on each student’s progress and any issues or concerns that may arise. This on-the-job training enables students graduating from the vocational skills program higher level skills that leads to employment in the Welding and related vocations.
