About This Role
This web developer role focuses on building and maintaining websites, from planning and architecture to deployment and optimization. It is suitable for a developer passionate about writing code and growing their skills through hands-on website development.
Responsibilities
- Participate in project planning, strategy, and task estimation
- Perform information architecture and data modeling, often in the context of a Content Management System (CMS)
- Work closely with designers and suggest changes based on technical feasibility
- Translate designs into front-end templates that render as responsive, interactive webpages
- Build custom features, often to extend CMS functionality by developing plugins
- Audit code to meet quality standards expected from modern websites, such as SEO, accessibility, security, etc.
- Optimize websites for performance through caching, image optimization, and other strategies
- Deploy websites, including setting up and configuring web servers and related services
- Migrate websites between servers and data migration across CMSes
- Maintain, support, and upgrade past projects
- Document work and communicate with project teams and clients
- Learn and stay on top of web standards, development workflows, coding strategies, and other industry best practices
Requirements
- At least 3 years of work experience
- Comfortable collaborating using version control systems (Git or Mercurial)
- Comfortable writing HTML, CSS, and JavaScript code and working with third-party front-end libraries
- Comfortable coding templates from a design mockup
- Comfortable installing, developing, and deploying a CMS (e.g., WordPress, Craft CMS, Ghost, Kirby, Statamic, Jekyll, Drupal etc.) powered website
- Favor a long-term relationship over a short stint
- Eager to take charge and get stuff done
- Open to learning and have the ability to pick up new technologies by reading documentation tutorials

Founded in 2011, the company has worked on websites for a variety of clients across domains such as film, tech events, internet advocacy, science outreach, online content publishing, public interest campaigns, and other design studios. It consciously remains small, with between 2 to 4 people, tackling projects collaboratively with peers and freelancers.
