About the role
Duties
You will serve as a Water Treatment Plant Operator performing tasks related to the full range of water purification, including non-filtration processes (introducing chemicals into the system) and filtration techniques. You will collect samples of incoming raw feeders to add agents such as lime, alum, or chlorine. Observes and records, and/or adjusts the many meters, gauges, motors, pumps, feeders, and recording and control devices. Takes hourly readings of water pressure, suction and vacuum, ammeter, flow meter, and scales, as well as, inspects plant. Draws samples at prescribed points throughout the treatment process and runs tests for alkalinity, hardness, chlorine residual, and PH while maintaining a daily operating log. Operates a stand by deep well water filtration and pumping plant and sludge dewatering system. Performs maintenance and major repair work at plant. Operates a fork lift and motor vehicle.
Qualifications
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT - Your resume must indicate your overall knowledge, skills and ability and/or training to perform the duties of a Water Treatment Plant Operator - WG-5409-10 without more than normal supervision as stated in the duties of the position.
There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the work of a Water Plant Operator Helper/Water Treatment Plant Operator without more than normal supervision.
To meet the basic eligibility, you must receive at least two points on the screen-out element indicated above and must have an average of two points on all the job elements listed below. Your application will be further evaluated to determine if you meet the best qualified cut-off for referral to the selecting official.

This position requires a Water Treatment Plant operators certification from the State of Maryland Department of Environment throughout the duration of employment.

Physical Effort
Operator frequently works in strained positions while cleaning equipment or lifting heavy equipment, tools or containers of chemicals and compounds. Job requires considerable walking or standing on concrete floors, and climbing stairways and ladders. Regularly lifts objects weighing 45-50 pounds; occasionally lifts heavier weights with assistance.
Working Conditions
Works inside and outside in all kinds of weather. Frequently exposed to running motors, pumps and machinery, loud noises and poor ventilation. Incumbent is exposed to chlorine, sulfuric acid, methane gas, sulfur dioxide and bacteria. Odors and fumes often unpleasant. Complete protective clothing including acid resistant gloves and aprons and gas mask or full face shield required when working with dangerous chemicals. Frequent exposure to dirty or greasy machinery.
