Vice President of Finance

About This Role

This senior financial leadership role is responsible for the strategic financial planning, governance, and Board and Audit Committee relationships of a Christian nonprofit organization. The position provides high-level financial judgment on budgeting, forecasting, banking and investment matters, and internal control strategy, and works closely with the Finance Manager.

Responsibilities

• Ensure day-to-day financial operations
• Delegate operational finance responsibilities as appropriate and build the finance team's capacity
• Periodically review existing banking and investment arrangements through a governance and risk lens
• Advise leadership and the Board on banking or investment questions
• Participate in discussions with external financial partners as needed
• Evaluate proposals or changes related to banking, investments, or financial advisors
• Communicate budget numbers to the CEO and leadership team throughout budget season
• Own the Finance Department's cost driver assumptions and defend the budget in leadership review
• Maintain and interpret rolling forecasts; coordinate with department heads on material variances
• Prepare variance explanations and management summaries to support monthly reporting and leadership decision-making
• Develop and refine multi-year (3-5 year) financial models, including scenario modeling
• Analyze revenue concentration and volatility, cost structure and scalability, and reserve adequacy
• Identify financial indicators and early warning signals for long-term sustainability and risk
• Review draft monthly financial statements prepared by the Director of Accounting
• Help management and the Audit Committee interpret financial results
• Support audit strategy and coordinate with external auditors on scope and approach
• Own the design of internal controls; resolve control gaps flagged by the Finance Manager
• Advise on financial policies, including reserves, investments, and risk tolerance
• Reinforce the control environment in coordination with internal finance staff
• Set strategy and advise on risk for compliance judgment calls related to international fund transfers and grant reporting
• Own the content, timing, and relationship management for Audit Committee meetings
• Direct the preparation of quarterly Audit Committee materials
• Participate in Board, Finance Committee, and Audit Committee meetings
• Support leadership in preparing and framing financial materials for governance review
• Present and interpret financial information for governance decision-making
• Assist with Board education on nonprofit financial health, reserves, liquidity, and governance
