Vessel Traffic Management Specialist, GS-2150-11

Duties

The position will serve as a Vessel Traffic Management Specialist, responsible for providing vessel traffic management services in a Coast Guard Vessel Traffic Center on a rotating shift. The Vessel Traffic Center is a twenty-four hour per day, seven days a week operation.

Typical work assignments include:

• Monitoring, informing, advising and directing the movement of vessel traffic in the assigned sector.
• Gathering, analyzing and disseminating nautical data and navigational safety information.
• Coordinating advisory information between participating and non-participating vessels and small craft, many of which may be involved in activities such as regattas, fishing or other marine events.
• Providing radar tracking or other sensor information in support of other Coast Guard missions, including search and rescue, law enforcement, and military missions.
• Operating a variety of surveillance sensors, communications, and data processing equipment.
• Participating in training exercises to prepare for maritime accidents or natural disasters.
• Briefing other traffic control specialists on all aspects of vessel traffic operations and weather conditions.

Qualifications

Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level in the federal service. Examples of specialized experience include: Working in a transportation facility or terminal which involved utilizing Federal, State, and municipal regulations governing the use of maritime vessels to perform duties; promoting the safe and efficient movements of maritime traffic in assigned geographic areas; ensuring that vessel traffic is properly informed, advised, or directed in order to reduce the probability of collisions, rammings, groundings, and ensuing environmental damage; monitoring the progress of vessels, and informing, advising, or directing vessel operators in assigned areas; maintaining a readiness posture to ensure traffic can be brought under positive control to avoid a catastrophic incident; and employing computer and communications technology to provide critical information and guidance to a master, pilot, or person in charge of vessels.

OR

Have successfully completed a Ph.D, or at least 54 semester hours toward a Ph.D, in traffic management, transportation, nautical science, marine affairs, marine engineering, marine transportation, or another field related to this position.

OR

Have a combination of specialized experience and graduate level education that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.

Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.
