Job Description

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

As a Unit Secretary on the 1st Floor GPU, you'll be the vital hub that keeps our unit running smoothly and our patients cared for seamlessly. You're not just handling paperwork—you're the communication lifeline between our nursing team, patients, and the broader healthcare network. Your role directly impacts patient experience and clinical efficiency, making you an essential member of our healthcare team.

Your Core Priorities:

  • Be the Communication Champion: Answer phones with professionalism, facilitate meaningful connections between our nursing unit and callers, and respond promptly to call lights—ensuring no one goes unheard.
  • Welcome Patients with Excellence: Create a positive first impression by managing new admissions with care—building patient charts, coordinating MyChart enrollment, and scheduling post-discharge appointments that set patients up for success.
  • Keep Operations Flowing: Maintain system continuity by processing downtime orders, managing paper forms, and ensuring all clinical, telecommunication, and computer equipment is clean, functional, and ready to support patient care.
  • Coordinate Care Seamlessly: Contact consultative services, arrange interpreter support in collaboration with nursing staff, and manage patient information transitions—all while maintaining confidentiality and accuracy.
  • Support Emergency Readiness: Participate in emergency response activities and purposeful rounding according to unit standards, demonstrating your commitment to patient safety.
  • Maintain Technical Excellence: Perform monthly maintenance on critical equipment, track maintenance requests, troubleshoot technical issues, and reboot systems as needed—keeping technology working for our team.

Qualifications

Education/Experience Required:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
  • One year in healthcare setting such as medical office, hospital or laboratory required.
  • Previous experience as a unit secretary preferred.
