Transit Adjudication Bureau Hearing Officer

About This Role

This night-shift post on the cardiac ward pairs patient care with mentoring new nurses. The Hearing Officer evaluates evidence, applies applicable rules and procedures, and issues decisions and orders in accordance with applicable statutes, rules, policies, and procedures.

Responsibilities

• Conduct fair and impartial administrative hearings
• Review testimony, evidence, and case records
• Apply the applicable MTA Rules of Conduct and all applicable laws, rules, policies, and procedures
• Issue timely written decisions and orders
• Ensure due process and procedural fairness
• Participate on appeal boards, as assigned
• Complete duties outlined in TAB Operations Manuals

Requirements

• Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school
• Admission to practice law in the State of New York for at least three (3) years
• Experience adjudicating administrative hearing cases
• Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to manage a high-volume caseload in a fast-paced environment
• Strong judgment, attention to detail, and decision-making skills
• Proficiency with TABIS, Microsoft Office, Windows, LexisNexis, and related systems
• Public sector legal experience, particularly within New York City or New York State government

Important Details

• Schedule: 4 days per month, 8:30 AM - 3:30 PM, or as otherwise required by operational needs
• Travel: May be required to other MTA locations or other external sites

• Based on evaluation of education, skills, experience, interview, and written assessment
• All selected candidates will be subject to a full background investigation that includes employment and education

Other Conditions

• Subject to statutory appointment by the NYCT President
• All employees who hold a policymaking position must file an Annual Statement of Financial Disclosure (FDS) with the NYS Commission on Ethics and Lobbying in Government (the “Commission”)
