Telecommunicator I

About This Role

The Telecommunicator I maintains communications via radio with on-duty police officers and security guards and monitors security and safety systems at the university. The role involves answering emergency and non-emergency telephone calls, providing assistance to clients, and monitoring safety and security systems.

Responsibilities

• Answer emergency and non-emergency phone calls and coordinate the response of law enforcement officers
• Monitor various security and safety systems to ensure a safe environment for all who visit the campus
• Communicate with officers as they patrol the campus as necessary
• Use a range of computer systems, entering, updating, and recovering data as necessary
• Adhere to and communicate changing safety policies as necessary
• Serve as a point of contact after hours and on weekends for all university-related inquiries
• Attend to faculty, staff, and students who visit the walk-up window
• Perform all other duties as assigned

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent (experience may be substituted in lieu of education)
• Minimum of one (1) year of related job experience (education may be substituted in lieu of experience)
• Must possess a Basic Telecommunications Proficiency Certificate issued by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) or complete an accredited telecommunicator training program within one year of hire
• Knowledge of the principles of working as a Telecommunicator in a higher education environment
• Excellent communication skills
• Strong customer care skills
• Ability to type a minimum of 30 wpm
• Ability to operate radio and communications systems
• Ability to listen
• Ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse community
• Must have precise hand-eye coordination, good spatial awareness, and the ability to identify and distinguish colors
• Must be available to work all shifts, including weekends, holidays, and mandatory overtime as needed
