Teacher - English as a Second Language

About This Role

This teaching position in the Worcester Public Schools focuses on providing rigorous instruction in English as a Second Language to a diverse student population. The role involves aligning teaching with district and state curriculum, regularly assessing student comprehension, and adapting instruction to meet the learning needs of all students, particularly those learning English and students with disabilities. The successful candidate will leverage the school's diversity to create rich learning environments.

Responsibilities

• Remain up to date regarding curriculum content
• Effectively plan and assess curriculum and instruction
• Mentor students' understanding of the curriculum effectively and adjust instruction, materials, or assessments, when appropriate
• Effectively manage the classroom environment
• Provide effective instruction, which includes making learning goals clear to the students, using appropriate instructional and questioning techniques
• Use innovative approaches and instructional strategies, including the effective use of technologies, to increase student learning and confidence to learn
• Promote high standards and expectations for student achievement
• Promote equity and appreciation of diversity to ensure equitable opportunities for student learning, including implementing specific strategies for students with special needs, with 504 plans and/or second language learners
• Assure equal educational opportunity to all individuals regardless of race, color, gender, age, marital status, religion, gender identity, national origin, sexual orientation, homelessness, or disability
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned

Requirements

• Appropriate Massachusetts DESE license in English as a Second Language PK-6
• SEI Endorsement
• BA degree

Nice to have:

• Teaching experience in the content area
• Demonstrated experience supporting students with special needs
• Ability to speak Albanian, Arabic, Nepali, Portuguese, Spanish, Vietnamese, or an African Language
• Experience teaching students who are English language learners
• Demonstrated experience with second language acquisition
• Candidates who are licensed in another state will be considered if they qualify for the temporary license from DESE (must possess the equivalent license from another state and must have documented proof of working under that license for at least three complete school years). Candidates will need to apply for and pay for the DESE license as a condition of employment.
