Job Description and Duties
Under close supervision of the Supervising Property Appraiser (SPA) in the Unitary Valuation & Auditing Unit of the SAPD, the Tax Auditor (TA) performs the least difficult tax audits, reviews, and examinations of businesses (taxpayers) accounting books, records, financial statements, and business property filings (tax returns) to calculate and allocate the amount of tax legally due in accordance with California's Revenue and Taxation (RTC) Laws, rules, annotations, audit standards, audit regulations, policies, and procedures. Participation and completion of training courses.

This recruitment has been posted for more vacancies than currently exist as it may be used to fill additional identical vacancies which occur within 180 days of the closing date of this bulletin.

Effective December 30, 2025, Tax Auditors may be eligible for Recruitment Hiring Above Minimum (HAM) salary rate of $5,528 per month (Range A only).

Under Government Code 14200, this position may be eligible for full or part-time telework for eligible candidates residing in California.

Working Conditions

  • Daily use of a personal computer, office equipment, and/or telephone.

The BOE is one of California’s ten constitutional offices. It is the only elected tax board in the country and is comprised of Four Equalization District Members and the State Controller. Since 1879, the BOE’s constitutional and statutory duties include the oversight of the 58 County Assessors to ensure assessment practices are uniform and consistent statewide. In addition, the BOE directly assesses the property of regulated railroads and certain public utilities, collects the private railroad car tax, and is responsible for the Alcoholic Beverage Tax and Tax on Insurers.

Special Requirements

  • Travel required thirty percent (30%) of the time.
  • Position requires employee to have and maintain a valid: California Driver’s License.
  • Position requires to obtain BOE appraiser certification within one year after qualifying for certification.
  • Travel throughout California up to thirty percent (30%) of the time by automobile or airplane.
  • Travel out of state may be required.
  • Overnight travel may be required.

Individuals who are currently in the classification, eligible for lateral transfer, eligible for reinstatement, have list or LEAP eligibility, are in the process of obtaining list eligibility, or have SROA and/or Surplus eligibility (please attach your letter, if available). SROA and Surplus candidates are given priority; therefore, individuals with other eligibility may be considered in the event no SROA or Surplus candidates apply. Individuals who are eligible for a Training and Development assignment may also be considered for this position(s).
