Surgical Technologist

About This Role

The Surgical Technologist is responsible for the care and safety of patients under the guidance of a Registered Nurse. This role includes processing instruments for sterilization across various departments and assisting with procedures in all areas of Surgical Services. The position requires taking on-call hours and contributing to a collaborative team environment.

Responsibilities

• Recognize and report relevant patient data to ensure pre, intra, and post-operative needs are met
• Anticipate the needs of the surgeon to provide quality patient care
• Perform effectively in crises or complex situations
• Recommend changes in policy and procedure to assure quality care
• Stay current in areas of responsibility, safety, and surgeon preferences
• Provide in-services and report on new developments in job responsibilities
• Demonstrate knowledge of aseptic techniques and surgical instrumentation
• Handle specimens properly and assist with preparing and processing supplies
• Anticipate and provide supplies in a timely manner
• Assist with research and evaluation of new equipment and supplies
• Update preference cards and prepare case carts
• Assist in staff scheduling and orientation of new staff
• Evaluate the work performance of other staff by providing feedback
• Coordinate work in surgery and assist in patient transfers
• Contribute to teamwork and a positive work environment

Requirements

• Graduate of an accredited school of surgical technology
• Current certification or ability to obtain within six months of hire
• Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
• Preferred experience in inventory and materials control
• Effective communication and teamwork skills
• Physical ability to stand for long periods and lift as needed
• Sincere interest and responsibility in patient care
• Preferred experience in processing sterile equipment/instruments
