Surgical Technologist

About This Role

This night-shift post on the cardiac ward pairs patient care with mentoring new nurses. This Surgical Technologist role at the Surgery Center at Westpark involves working in a collaborative surgical environment, maintaining a sterile field, anticipating the needs of surgeons, and ensuring each orthopaedic procedure runs smoothly.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and maintain the sterile field, including opening surgical supplies and instruments, draping, and preparing and testing equipment
• Identify, select, and coordinate the instruments, equipment, and supplies needed for scheduled orthopaedic procedures
• Assist surgeons throughout surgical procedures by anticipating instrumentation, sutures, sponges, and other necessary supplies
• Assist with gowning and gloving surgeons and maintain proper sterile technique throughout procedures
• Participate in surgical time-outs and sponge, needle, blade, and sharp counts to promote patient safety
• Monitor the sterile field and identify potential breaks in sterile technique
• Assist with surgical dressing application, specimen handling, and communication with the circulating nurse
• Assist with operating room turnover and preparation for subsequent procedures
• Clean, inspect, lubricate, package, and sterilize surgical instruments and equipment, including proper handling of loaner instrument sets
• Rotate into the Sterile Processing area as needed
• Collaborate with surgeons, nurses, and other members of the surgical team to ensure safe, efficient patient care
• Participate in mandatory training, staff meetings, and continuing education to stay current with surgical procedures and techniques

Requirements

• Comprehensive knowledge of sterile technique, surgical positioning and draping, surgical instrumentation, equipment, basic anatomy, and surgical procedures
• Organized, flexible, and adaptable, with the ability to remain calm in a busy surgical environment
• Strong communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and organizational skills
• Minimum of one year of experience working in an operating room environment
• Current BLS certification, or the ability to obtain certification within one year of hire

Nice to have:

• Two or more years of experience
• Previous orthopaedic surgical experience
• Knowledge of instrument cleaning, packaging, and sterilization using an autoclave, or a willingness to learn
