About the role

Duties

As a Supervisory Transportation Security Inspector - Cargo within the Office of Security Operations (OSO), Transportation Security Administration (TSA), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), you will:

  • Administer critical and complex compliance and enforcement programs designed to protect the Nation's public from air transportation piracy and other acts of sabotage to air transportation.
  • Plan, develop, implement, administer, and evaluate critical aviation security inspection programs for compliance by passenger air carriers that transport cargo, all-cargo air carriers, and business interests with airport and aviation security policies and requirements.
  • Approve leave; coach and develop employees; and recommend corrective or disciplinary actions.
  • Assist in budget planning and projecting short-term needs; manage projects within assigned resources.
  • Resolve routine problems that typically impact the objectives of the organizational unit.
  • Apply experience and a comprehensive technical knowledge to perform multiple, varying, and complex assignments as a principal technical specialist or as a project manager or team leader for large activities under the minimal direction of a manager or executive.
  • Represent TSA internally and externally as a senior technical point of contact, playing a lead role in drafting reports and contractual documents for external distribution. Broad policies and objectives provide general guidance for addressing issues, but allow considerable discretion to develop new and innovative approaches.
  • Allocate resources to accomplish large work activities within established schedules.

Qualifications

To qualify for the SV-J Pay Band (equivalent to GS-14), you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the SV-I Pay Band or the GS-13 in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private sector. Specialized Experience is defined as experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Such experience includes conducting inspections and investigations; engaging in testing aviation security systems; determining when enforcement actions should be taken; and documenting the results to monitor compliance with policies, regulations, and agreements to standards.

National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: Credit for experience is given based on a 40-hour workweek. Part-time experience is credited on a part-time ratio, i.e., working 20 hours per week for two months equals one month of experience. No additional credit is given for overtime.
