About the role

Duties

  • Determines preparedness and suppression needs, facilitates procurement, and formulates and prepares project plans for the handcrew.
  • Formulates annual budget and maintains a system of accounts to track program expenditures.
  • Procures capital equipment and provides property management oversight; is accountable for property.
  • Evaluates organizational training needs; develops and implements both technicial and agency specific training for the handcrew.
  • Recognizes, reacts to and communicates changes in weather and fire beharior; topography and fuel types; and adapts planned strategies and tactics to identify and relocate firelines, escape routes and safety zones.
  • Identifies and analyzes suppression tactics and strategies employed on the fires; revises and/or develops alternatives in view of such conditions as fuels, weather, and topography.
  • Provides technical and administrative supervision to the handcrew.
  • Plans and directs overall work to be accomplished by subordinates, sets and adjusts priorities, prepares schedules for completion of work.

Qualifications

Specialized Experience Requirements:

In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the specialized experience requirement - please be sure to include this information in your resume. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade of the position to be filled.

Examples of Specialized Experience to qualify for the GS-07: One year of GS-06 experience including prior on-the-line experience making on-site evaluations, making decisions and determining appropriate tactical response; indirectly supervising, planning, and directing the work accomplished by a (20) person wildland fire suppression crew; serving as a technical instructor for national, geographic area, local unit fire suppression, fire management, and all-risk training courses.

Substitution of Education: You may use one year of directly related graduate level education to qualify for the GS-07.

Examples of Specialized Experience to qualify for the GS-08: One year of GS-07 experience including prior on-the-line experience making on-site evaluations, making strategic decisions and determining appropriate tactical response; directly and indirectly supervising, planning, and directing the work accomplished by a (20) person wildland fire suppression crew; developing subordinate performance standards and evaluating performance; serving as a technical instructor for national, geographic area, local unit fire suppression, fire management, and all-risk training courses.

Substitution of Education: You may use two years of directly related graduate level education to qualify for the GS-08.

Selective Placement Factors: This position requires a special qualification that has been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as a screen out element. Those who do not provide evidence they possess the following selective factor(s) will be rated not qualified.

1. STCR (Strike Team Leader-Crew) OR TFLD (Task Force Leader)

2. CRWB (Single Resource Boss-Crew)

3. ICT4 (Incident Commander, Type 4)

You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR 300.604. If you are a current Federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must have completed a minimum of 52 weeks at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled.
