About the role

Duties

  • Manage daily operations, scheduling and timekeeping of the Picatinny Fire Department by serving as Assistant Chief.
  • Direct subordinate lead firefighters and firefighters on daily activities and operations.
  • Manage inspections, training and tour operations of assigned personnel.
  • Assist the Fire Chief and Deputy Fire Chief in day to day management operations.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. GS-09:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience in directing firefighting activities for multiple crews with the use of Incident Command policies and procedures, experience managing operational roster and schedules of each shift to ensure adequate coverage, and experience administering firefighting training activities for structural firefighting, hazardous materials and inspections. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).

GS-10:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes expertise in overseeing direct firefighting activities for multiple crews and stations, expertise supervising subordinate staff members and experience reviewing reports, records, and procedures to make suggestions on improvements to firefighter techniques and/or policies. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

Selective Placement Factor: This position requires you to possess and maintain all of the following Department of Defense, or National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) equivalent, certifications (Please note: All certifications must be uploaded at time of application):

  • Fire Officer III Certification
  • Fire Inspector II Certification
  • Fire Instructor II Certification
  • Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) Incident Commander

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas:
