Duties
Supervise an Casualty Assistance Center. The Area of Responsibility (AOR) includes 1-5 states covering 1,500 - 572,000 square miles and the provision of casualty assistance services to 38,000 - 1,200,000 active duty, reservists, retirees, former service members, and their families. Supervises a Branch, which is operational 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Incumbent and subordinates are subject to on-call 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Incumbent serves in an extremely sensitive and high visibility position directly involved in all casualty incidents, involving notification of death, casualty assistance, mortuary services and burial honors. Incumbent provides direction, continuity and guidance to General Staff, ACOMS, subordinate commands, Reserves, and National Guard. Provides training to all organization pertaining to casualty assistance and funeral honors on a monthly basis or as needed basis. Quality of work affects every family of deceased Soldiers in terms of veteran's entitlements, monetary and other statuary entitlements and final honors for interment. Supervises the Contract Officer Representative in the execution of duties with relation to mortuary services contracts. Responsible for notifying and providing assistance to the Line of Duty (LOD) Officer of all incidents that may result in a formal or informal LOD.

Experience required: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: working in a Casualty Assistance program ensuring the accomplishment of program objectives and goals; and Researching Casualty Assistance guidance, policy and written procedures for operational efficiency.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities) in the following areas:
- Skill in administering program, management of a Casualty Assistance Center (CAC)
- Knowledge of DoD/DA guidance, policy and procedures concerning Casualty Assistance
- Skill in effective communication methods
- Ability to manage and distribute subordinates workload
Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade (or equivalent).
