About the role
Duties
The employee is a member of the South Florida/Caribbean Inventory and Monitoring Network (SFCN) of the National Park Service based in Palmetto Bay, Florida which is between Miami and Homestead. This position functions as the project manager of the SFCN Vegetation Map Project team that is generating a detailed, high quality, vegetation map of Everglades National Park and Big Cypress National Preserve covering over 2 million acres. The project utilizes the interagency Vegetation Classification for South Florida Natural Areas (USGS OFR 2006-1240 or later versions) containing over 600 vegetation classes and utilizes a 50m x 50m raster grid cell approach to mapping via 3D stereoscopic photogrammetric workstations. The project involves collecting several thousand field data points including photos to assist mapping. A strong knowledge of South Florida vegetation communities is required as well as practical experience conducting fieldwork safely in backcountry locations in these parks. The project is already underway and is expected to conclude in 2019. Funding is provided annually by both the National Park Service Vegetation Inventory Program and through the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the CERP RECOVER program, but cannot be guaranteed. The employee will work under the supervision of the SFCN Program Manager.
Qualifications
SELECTIVE FACTOR: Applicants must have a solid foundation in South Florida botany and ecosystems as evidenced by: research, work experience, school, or peer reviewed research articles in South Florida ecology/ecosystems with a strong emphasis in plant identification including exotic species. Candidates who do not meet this requirement by close of this announcement will receive no further consideration for this position.

In order to qualify for Supervisory Biologist, 0401-12, you must meet the following: Minimum Requirements and Specialized Experience as follows:
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
A. Have a four year degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry or related disciplines appropriate to the position. (You must submit your transcript(s) that demonstrates this coursework at time of application submission)

B. Have a combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry or related disciplines appropriate to the position. (You must submit your transcript(s) that demonstrates this coursework at time of application submission).
In addition to meeting the selective placement factor and minimum requirements stated above you must meet the specialized experience below:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Have one year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-11 In the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience include but not limited to: 1) design, development and conduct of protocols to analyze spatial and temporal data; 2) conduct of sampling, experimental design, statistical analyses and biometrics relative to wetlands ecology; 3) independent planning and conduct of comprehensive biological studies/investigations and requests for proposals; 4) modifying and adapting standard biological techniques and procedures; 5) serving as a technical resource on ecology issues; 6) design and management of projects, studies to provide an understanding of the effects of environmental perturbations in study areas.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies".
Education
To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
