About the role

Duties

As a SUPERVISORY ASYLUM OFFICER, you will:

  • Supervise individuals who make determinations on applications for asylum, applications for suspension of deportation, cancellation of removal, refugee status, and motions to reopen and reconsider.
  • Oversee the screening and adjudications of individuals who indicate a fear during the expedited removal process or other forms of removal without a hearing, to determine whether they will be allowed to present their asylum claims and/or claims to withholding of removal and protection under the Torture Convention before an immigration judge.
  • Conduct management and supervisory reviews aimed at ensuring that applications for asylum benefits and other services are being granted appropriately and that an appropriate level of quality in interviewing, case write-ups, and out-processing is achieved and maintained.
  • Prepare plans, reports, and analyses of the immigration benefits operation, to include, reviewing individual and program performance, and taking action to ensure compliance with established requirements, goals, standards, and objectives.
  • Advise and plan the work to be accomplished by subordinates, based on priorities and difficulty of work assignments.

Qualifications

GS-13: You qualify at the GS-13 level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience, equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the federal government, which has equipped you with the skills needed to successfully perform the duties of the position. You must have experience performing the following duties:

  • Making final determinations on or preparing legal briefs or other written memoranda that advocate for complex and sensitive immigration benefits cases that are discretionary and potentially precedent-setting;
  • Reviewing asylum and/or immigration benefit decisions to ensure proper application of all relevant guidance;
  • Providing technical guidance to individuals who adjudicate immigration benefits cases or who prepare legal briefs or other written memoranda that advocate for complex and sensitive immigration benefits cases; and,
  • Preparing reports, analyses, and field guides in support of program management objectives.

Education

EDUCATIONAL SUBSTITUTION: There is no educational substitution at this grade level.

Training: If you have not already done so, you will be required to attend the residential, paid RAIO Combined Training Program and the Division-specific course(s), that relate to this position, at a USCIS training facility. Depending on the position, the courses may last up to nine weeks, including six weeks of residential training and three weeks of online training. In addition, if you have not already done so, you will be required to attend the residential, paid BASIC Immigration Officer training program, lasting six weeks, at a USCIS training facility. The trainings must be completed successfully according to the standards of the agency. Failure to do so will be grounds for mandatory removal from the position. Such failure will result in either reassignment to a different position, demotion, or separation by appropriate procedures.
