About the role

In the moment, for the future
At Genesis, we’re always looking ahead - to new possibilities, smarter solutions, and a better energy future for Aotearoa New Zealand. Every role here plays a part in shaping what’s next, whether it’s through cutting-edge technology, bold thinking, or everyday excellence. If you’re driven by progress and inspired by purpose, this is your chance to be part of something remarkable. Step into a career where your actions today help power tomorrow.

What you’ll do
As a Strategic Business Development Lead, internally known as a Strategic Business Development Partner, you’ll identify, shape and convert significant commercial and industrial opportunities that strengthen Genesis’ position and support a more renewable, flexible and resilient energy system.
You’ll lead complex opportunities from early market insight and qualification through commercial structuring, negotiation and execution. Working across Genesis, you’ll bring together the right expertise to create compelling solutions that deliver enduring value for our customers and the business.

Some of the key responsibilities are:

  • Build and maintain a strong pipeline of high-value strategic opportunities and partnerships across priority markets.
  • Develop trusted relationships with C-suite executives, investors, developers and other senior decision-makers.
  • Shape deal strategies, value propositions and commercial structures across energy supply, renewables, flexibility, resilience and related services.
  • Lead cross-functional deal teams, creating alignment and momentum across commercial, technical, financial, legal and risk workstreams.
  • Lead complex commercial negotiations and guide opportunities through governance, approval and contracting.
  • Maintain strong market intelligence across areas including data centres, industrial investment, energy transition, technology and infrastructure.

What you’ll bring
You’ll be an experienced commercial leader who is comfortable operating in complex, high-value environments. You’ll combine strategic thinking with strong commercial judgement and have the credibility to influence senior decision-makers while navigating opportunities from ambiguity through to execution.

We’re looking for someone with:

  • Significant senior experience in business development, strategic partnerships, commercial strategy or complex solution sales.
  • A strong track record of originating and progressing high-value, long-cycle and multi-party commercial opportunities.
  • Strong commercial, financial and contract capability, with the ability to understand deal economics, risk and strategic value.
  • Proven experience leading cross-functional teams and influencing outcomes without relying on formal authority.
  • Executive-level relationship management and complex negotiation experience.
  • Strong written communication skills, including business cases, executive presentations, commercial proposals and decision papers.

Experience within energy, infrastructure, utilities, data centres, industrial development, technology or another capital-intensive sector would be beneficial. Knowledge of New Zealand energy markets, PPAs, renewable products, flexibility, storage or customer decarbonisation would also be valued.

How we’ll help you thrive
At Genesis, we know that every moment matters - it’s not just about the mahi today, it’s also all the other benefits that set you up for a thriving future.

Some of our benefits include:

  • Southern Cross medical insurance, plus life, trauma and income protection insurances.
  • Electricity and gas discounts and an extra 20 Power Shout hours per year.
  • Up to 4% match on KiwiSaver contributions or 3% with our GenSaver allowance.
  • Flexible working and leave options to support you to balance personal and professional needs.
  • Annual wellbeing allowance, access to Best Doctors online service for you and your family and other wellbeing offerings.
  • Career development opportunities and a supportive learning culture.

We're proud of our strong culture, which makes Genesis a great place to work. Ensuring our people are safe at work and can be themselves is crucial, this is reflected in our focus on safety and wellbeing.
