Duties
The incumbent’s responsibility, first and foremost, is to lead by example, to shape and sustain a working environment most conducive to the successful performance of those entrusted to his/her leadership and direction; creating a positive atmosphere and culture within the Semper Fit Division and its constituent branches that reflects the pride, professionalism, sense of accomplishment, fulfillment, collaborative engagement, well-being, and wholehearted customer focus of its employees is the incumbent’s essential purpose and focus of main effort. Plans, organizes, coordinates, and directs a comprehensive intramural athletic program, to include tournaments. Plans and directs a wide range of indoor/outdoor seasonal sports programs. Schedules and publicizes athletic activities, ensuring maximum effectiveness in attracting and motivating participants, arranges for equipment, supplies, awards and services required to maintain the programs. Responsible for hiring officials, establishing league schedules, ordering rule books and verifying bills submitted for officiating services. Prepares an after-action report on each sport or tournament conducted. Makes recommendations for new sports programs, services and facility improvements based on patron feedback. Reviews league policies, procedures, sport specific bylaws, ensuring compliance and consistency with national governing bodies.
Responsible for sports coordinator(s) and grounds and maintenance section within Semper Fit Division. Ensures facilities and playing surfaces are maintained, safe, and prepared in accordance with the rules and regulation of the sport and league. Prepares supporting data for new plans and budget requirements. Submits and monitors a sport’s budget. Monitors a very extensive equipment issue program and applies reasonable control measures to maximize usage of supplies and equipment. Conducts inventories of resources (uniforms, equipment, supplies) and ensures adequate safeguards, storage, and maintenance. Supervises employees to include: assigning and distributing work, coaching, counseling, tutoring, and mentoring employees; approving and disapproving leave, recommending and completing personnel actions, disciplinary actions, completing performance reviews, signing timesheets, training employees, keeping abreast of and actively supporting the principles of the EEO program, and prevention of sexual harassment. Must be alert to substance abuse, and take appropriate action. Provides World Class Customer Service with an emphasis on courtesy. Assists customers and communicates positively in a friendly manner. Takes action to solve problems quickly. Alerts the higher-level supervisor, or proper point of contact for help when problems arise. Ensures implementation of an activity safety program in accordance with the Base Safety Program. Advise employees of available safety regulations, instructions, materials, and equipment. Promptly reports workplace accidents/injury to the Human Resources Office. Ensures that safety training is provided to employees. Complies with OSHA standards and takes action to correct unsafe or unhealthy working conditions. Ensures employees understand safety infractions that can result in disciplinary actions, and follows through with appropriate action. Ensures minimal loss of duty by complying with “Return to Work” program initiatives, and following up on employee well-being. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Three years experience that demonstrates knowledge of the principles, concepts, and methods of intramural athletic (recreational sports) and/or program operations, one year at a supervisory level. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in recreation sports management or related field leading to a bachelor’s degree, from an accredited college or university is preferred. Skill to use automated data processing procedures and administrative correspondence. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license. This is a mixed position where the incumbent must be able to lift and carry objects up to 45 lbs independently and objects over 45 lbs with assistance.
