SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER OF VISUALLY IMPAIRED - ST LUCY SCHOOL FOR CHILDREN WITH VISUAL IMPAIRMENTS

Teacher of the Visually Impaired St. Lucy School for Children with Visual Impairments 3031 Stamford Street Philadelphia, PA 19136 St. Lucy School for Children with Visual Impairments is a special education school that serves students with visual impairments and mild additional disabilities. The teacher must have a degree in special education elementary and PA certification.

Qualifications

• Possesses a true passion for working with students with special needs
• Develop and implement IEP goals and objectives designed to meet the individual needs of each student using observation and assessment
• Establish and maintain an atmosphere of learning by providing instruction to students who access educational materials using magnification, braille, and adaptive technology according to their individual needs
• Ability to teach the general education curriculum with accommodations
• Collect data on IEP goals and adjust to student needs when needed
• Ability to collaborate with colleagues to meet school wide needs.
• Bachelor or master’s degree in general education or special education
• Certification as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired or Certification in Special Education.
• Knowledge of the EUB Literary Braille Code and the Nemeth Code.
• Familiarity with speech synthesizer software for computer use, knowledge of the operation of the Apex Braille Note Taker Plus and familiarity with Braille embossers.
• Familiarity with low vision devices such as the telescope, CCTV and hand held video magnifiers.
• Ability to maintain appropriate data collection to monitor student progress toward IEP goals.
• Ability to teach the general education curriculum to students with modification for vision loss.
• Knowledge of educational approaches utilized with students with CVI.
• Orientation and Mobility certification preferred but not necessary.
• Willingness to collaborate with general education teachers

Responsibilities

• Ability to determine functional and academic implications of eye reports and implement environmental and academic adaptations accordingly.
• Professional communication with low vision specialists, ophthalmologists, and optometrists.
• Conduct functional visual assessments and write functional vision reports.
• Conduct learning media assessments and writing learning media reports.
• Conduct appropriate educational assessments to monitor academic progress.
• Develop data for IEP goals to address educational needs identified through assessment.
• Develop lesson plans and unit plans following curriculum established by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.
• Ability to collaborate with the general education classroom teachers in to facilitate inclusion.

This is a full time, 10 month position with benefits for the 2026-27 school year.
