Sheetmetal Mechanic (Aircraft)

Duties
The major duties include, but are not limited to:

• Inspects aircraft and determines nature and extent of repairs to be made using applicable TMs as guidelines.
• Troubleshoots aircraft structural repair situations in such areas as fuselage, tail, wings, cowlings and stabilizers.
• Aligns component structures and airframe using precision optical measuring instruments, plumline and level.
• Performs fabrication of local manufactured items required for facility support.
• Sets up and operates power shears, brakes, and rolls, dimpling machines, drill presses, saws, heat-treating furnaces, hardness testers and other metal working equipment, including use of all hand tools of the trade.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Subject to danger involved in or resulting from: use of powered shop equipment, high pressure gas cylinders and high electrical voltage; swiftly activated hydraulic or pneumatic metal aircraft assemblies, such as landing gear, speed brakes, flaps, and other components; working near aircraft jet blast, heat, fuel, oil, high noise levels, icy amps, wet or slippery surfaces of aircraft and work stands. Subject to cuts and burns, eye strain and skin irritation from fumes, paints, and fluids. Works outdoors and indoors.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Required to climb, stand, stoop, bend, stretch, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts parts and equipment weighing up to 20 pounds. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing 50 pounds or over.

Qualifications
GENERAL EXPERIENCE:
Experience that has provided the candidate with the ability to plan, manufacture, and install cylindrical, square, or rectangular-shaped objects that have easily constructed fastenings such as single and double-hem edges and single, double or grooved seams.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
Your resume and any other supporting documentation you wish to provide must clearly substantiate you currently possess 6, 12, or 18 months of specialized experience in the following:
WG-05 REQUIRES 6 MONTHS:

• Experience which demonstrates the ability to use common hand tools, power tools, measuring instruments and make repetitive repairs.
• Experience which demonstrates the basic knowledge of the type of work performed by the occupational series.
• Experience providing assistance to the journeyman by performing the simpler and routine duties of the trade.

WG-08 REQUIRES 12 MONTHS:

• Experience in planning, manufacturing, and installing cylindrical, square, or rectangular-shaped objects that have easily constructed fastening.
• Experience cutting and forming by using basic hand and powered tools such as hammers, chisels, hand snips, band and circle saws, squaring shears, seamers, bar folders, breaks and stakes.
• Experience assembling parts by seaming, bolting, screwing, riveting, tacking, spot-welding or soldering.
• Experience demonstrating a basic understanding of using measuring instruments.

WG-10 REQUIRES 18 MONTHS:

• Experience in planning, layout, and construction skills to manufacture items and systems with dovetailed seams, set-in-bottom seams, burred-bottom seams, or wired or lock seams.
• Experience using more complicated shop tools and equipment.
• Experience in using metals including stainless steel, copper sheet, magnesium, honeycomb material and alloys.
• Experience demonstrating the use of more complicated mathematical calculations and complicated measuring instruments.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Ability to perform less difficult sheet metal work such as removing dents, filing away burrs, and squaring metal parts.
• Ability to fabricate and repair various major components or systems related to aircraft; component parts or entire sheet metal structures; and other items of equipment and systems involving close tolerances, and a variety or joints, hems, and edges.
• Ability to plan, construct, assemble, disassemble, repair, fabricate, and install irregular items and systems having combined shapes to exacting tolerances using the least number of seams and amount of metal.
• Ability to work from clear-cut work orders and instructions from supervisors or higher grade workers.
• Ability to complete assignments from work orders and instructions which explain precisely what steps and procedures are to be followed.
• Ability to work independently from written or oral instructions, blueprints, sketches, or personal inspection of items or systems to be manufactured or repaired.
• Ability to develop plans which have predominantly straight edges and regular curves.
• Ability to independently develop plans and make decisions.
• Ability to do simple sheet metal layout under close supervision.
• Ability to do layout work common to the sheet metal trade.
• Skill in making layouts, patterns and templates using recognized trade methods and practices.
• Ability to operate a few of the basic metal working tools and the less complex types of machines.
• Ability to independently select, set up, and operate hand and powered machines.
• Knowledge of and skill in the selection and use of special sheet metal tools and equipment without instruction, and to develop modifications to prototype or test equipment.
