Sheet Metal Mechanic Leader

Duties

1. On a regular and recurring basis during shift operations, leads three or more mechanics performing the work of the shop.

2. Monitors the work of assigned technicians by passing along dispatch and/or in-shop production assignments as directed by the supervisor and/or maintenance control. Insures that needed materials, tools, and equipment are available, and obtains needed stock from supply locations as necessary. Works along with assigned technicians and sets the pace, performing non-supervisory sheet metal work.

3. Insures assigned technicians attend to work in order to ensure full utilization of personnel and completion of assignments in accordance with established time frames and priorities. Checks work in progress and/or upon completion for compliance with supervisor's instructions, appropriate tech orders, etc. Serves as a technical advisor by answering questions regarding appropriate procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives. Assures that safety, housekeeping, security, and other environmental rules are followed.

4. Advises the supervisor on status and progress of work, causes of delay, and overall work operations, problems, and individual performance (e.g., additional on-the-job training requirements for individual employees). As requested by the supervisor, provides section planning factors for maintenance planning, and on a daily basis, recommends adjustments, when necessary, in work shift schedules to provide optimum utilization of personnel in support of section requirements.

5. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements: Experience or training that has provided the candidate with sufficient knowledge to complete the work of this occupational series. Experience or training which demonstrates the candidate's ability to lead other technicians engaged in the duties performed by this occupational series.

Specialized Qualification Requirements: Must possess 24 months of the following:

• Experience in planning, layout, and construction skills to manufacture items and systems with dovetailed seams, set-in-bottom seams, burred-bottom seams, or wired or lock seams.
• Experience using more complicated shop tools and equipment.
• Experience in using metals including stainless steel, copper sheet, magnesium, honeycomb material, and alloys.
• Experience demonstrating the use of more complicated mathematical calculations and complicated measuring instruments.
• Experience which demonstrates the ability to plan, organize, and lead the work of others in fields directly related to the repair function of this occupational series.
• The ability to perform administrative functions; to read and interpret a variety of technical publications used in the repair of supported equipment.
• The ability to provide guidance to others in work related directly to this occupational series.

Placement Factors: Applicants should demonstrate through prior experience the following:

1. Skill to perform inspection procedures to include aircraft and/or aircraft support equipment work and daily shop operations.
2. Knowledge of metal working equipment and tools of the trade.
3. Ability to repair, modify and install honeycomb, phenolic, and Plexiglas components on aircraft and/or aircraft support equipment.
4. Knowledge of corrosion control and ability to treat and protect surfaces and components.
5. Ability to read and follow blueprints, schematics, drawings, and technical orders in repair and/or modification of aircraft and/or aircraft support equipment.
6. Completion of appropriate technical school/Career Development Courses (CDCs).
