About the role
A cashier is responsible for processing transactions, providing customer service, and maintaining accurate records at the point of sale in retail or service environments. Key Duties and Responsibilities
Cashiers handle a variety of tasks related to sales and customer service, including:
- Processing transactions: Accepting cash, credit/debit cards, checks, mobile payments, gift cards, and other payment methods, and issuing receipts, refunds, or store credits
- Scanning and verifying items: Ensuring correct pricing, applying discounts or promotions, and bagging purchases
- Cash management: Counting cash, providing accurate change, balancing and reconciling the cash drawer at the start and end of shifts
- Customer service: Greeting customers, answering questions about products, prices, promotions, and store policies, and resolving complaints or escalating issues to supervisors
- Returns and exchanges: Processing returns, exchanges, and price adjustments according to company policies
- Administrative and support tasks: Maintaining a clean and organized checkout area, restocking impulse items, supporting inventory counts, and following loss-prevention protocols
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Numerical and cash-handling skills: Ability to process transactions accurately and efficiently
- Customer service skills: Strong communication, patience, and composure to handle customer interactions professionally
- Technical proficiency: Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems, scanners, and other electronic equipment
- Attention to detail: Ensuring accurate pricing, correct change, and proper documentation of transactions
- Basic understanding of sales and promotions: Ability to apply discounts, loyalty programs, and upsell products when appropriate interview
