About the role
Senior Structural Engineer | Grand Rapids, MI (Remote Flexibility)
The firm: One of West Michigan's largest and most respected structural consultancies. Employee-owned, founded over four decades ago, and genuinely one of the fastest-growing structural teams in the region right now. This is not a firm chasing headcount for the sake of it. They have grown because the work keeps coming and good people keep staying.
Why this one is different
Most "senior structural engineer" ads read the same. This one is worth a proper look, and here is why.
- You own real projects. Think Engineer of Record work across healthcare, higher ed and K-12, commercial, industrial, municipal and mission-critical. New builds, renovations, adaptive reuse, plus forensic and evaluation work when a structure needs a second opinion. The portfolio is deliberately diverse, so you are not designing the same box on repeat.
- Employee-owned means you benefit when the firm wins. This is not a badge on a website. Low turnover, long tenure, and a team that treats the business like it is theirs, because it is.
- A clear runway to your PE (or beyond). Senior leadership is accessible, mentoring is built into how teams work, and they actively back licensure progression rather than paying lip service to it.
- Remote flexibility that is genuine. Strong candidates already work remotely here. If you deliver, they trust you to manage your own week.
- Stability without the stagnation. Steady, funded backlog and a growing team. You get the security of an established firm with the momentum of one that is genuinely expanding.
What you will actually do
- Serve as Engineer of Record and lead structural design and analysis from concept through construction documents
- Design across steel, reinforced and precast concrete, masonry, timber and light-gauge framing, covering both gravity and lateral systems
- Coordinate directly with architects, contractors, owners and developers, and represent the firm in front of clients and code officials
- Seal drawings, own QA/QC on your projects, and manage scope, schedule and fee
- Mentor and develop junior engineers, and help shape how the team grows
What they are looking for
- BS in Civil or Structural Engineering (MS a plus)
- Around 8+ years of building structural design experience, ideally with a stretch of that at a senior or lead level
- PE license, or clearly on the runway to it (they will support you getting there)
- Confident across common structural software (Revit, RISA, RAM, ENERCALC, AutoCAD and similar)
- Someone who wants ownership, enjoys mentoring, and cares about doing the work properly
The package
