About the Research environment and opportunities
The Patani lab has played a pioneering role in modelling neurodegenerative disease, with a particular focus on RNA metabolism and cellular autonomy using human patient-derived iPSC neuronal cultures. We are looking for creative scientists with intellectual curiosity, initiative and an entrepreneurial spirit to join the group. Successful candidates will work closely with the senior computational biology team and report directly to Prof. Patani. Our research aims to characterise the transcriptional and post-transcriptional mechanisms that contribute to neurodegeneration.
The lab comprises approximately equal numbers of computational and experimental scientists, and close collaboration between the two is central to how the group works. Candidates will therefore be expected to engage with projects across the full research lifecycle - from formulation of biological questions and experimental design, through quantitative analysis and target prioritisation, to experimental validation and mechanistic investigation.
Successful candidates will have the opportunity to develop and lead projects investigating how dysregulated RNA metabolism and gene regulation contribute to neurodegenerative disease. The laboratory has established expertise in this area, with recent work including Luisier et al., Nature Communications (2018); Tyzack et al., Brain (2021); Ziff et al., Nature Communications (2023); Ziff et al., Neuron (2023); and Neeves et al., Science Advances (2025), alongside reviews including Petrić Howe et al., Trends in Neurosciences (2023); Patani et al., Nature Reviews Neurology (2023); and Balendra et al., The Lancet Neurology (2025).
Projects may span transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation, RNA metabolism, disease-associated cellular states and other quantitative aspects of neurodegenerative disease biology. The precise scientific questions and methodological approaches will be developed in close discussion with Prof. Patani and the current computational biology Senior Research Fellow, taking into account the candidate's expertise, interests and career goals.
About the role
The SRF will partner closely with the current computational biology SRF and serve as an intellectual and quantitative lead within the laboratory, helping to formulate biological questions, shape experimental design, develop rigorous analytical strategies, and determine how computational findings can be prioritised and experimentally validated.
To be considered for the role of Senior Research Fellow, the candidate must:
- Hold a PhD specialising in statistics, biostatistics, applied mathematics, computational biology, bioinformatics or a closely related quantitative discipline applied to biological or biomedical research.
- At least three years of relevant postdoctoral research experience.
- A strong publication track record appropriate to career stage demonstrating substantial intellectual contributions to quantitative/computational research, including first or co-first author publications.
- Evidence of scientific independence, including the ability to formulate research questions and independently design and lead quantitative investigations.
- Advanced expertise in statistical and/or computational modelling of complex biological systems, beyond routine application of established analysis pipelines.
- Experience contributing to experimental/study design, including consideration of statistical power, replication, confounding, batch effects and appropriate analytical strategies.
- Experience leading multidisciplinary projects and working closely with experimental scientists.
- Experience mentoring or supervising junior researchers and providing technical/scientific leadership.
- Evidence of rigorous and reproducible computational research practices, including version control, documented analytical workflows and appropriate statistical validation.
- Ability to contribute intellectually to manuscripts, grant applications and the development of new research directions.
Required experience:
- Proficiency in at least one programming language used for quantitative data analysis, preferably R and/or Python. Experience with additional programming languages is welcome.
- Experience conducting rigorous quantitative or computational research in an academic, clinical, industrial or equivalent research environment.
- Experience analysing complex, high-dimensional datasets, including omics data such as sequencing, proteomics/mass spectrometry or imaging data, or other large-scale biological datasets. Candidates should have experience working from raw or minimally processed data through quality control, analysis and interpretation.
- Experience applying quantitative, statistical or computational approaches to investigate biological mechanisms or complex biological systems.
- A strong working knowledge of statistics and quantitative reasoning, including appropriate statistical testing, interpretation of uncertainty, multiple testing, confounding and model validation.
- Ability to critically evaluate analytical results rather than relying solely on standard software outputs or established pipelines.
- Ability to communicate quantitative findings clearly to scientists from both computational and experimental backgrounds.
- An interest in understanding the underlying biology and in working closely with experimental scientists to develop and test biological hypotheses.
Desirable experience :
- Knowledge of, or strong interest in, molecular biology, RNA biology, neuroscience and/or neurodegenerative disease.
- Experience working in Linux and high-performance computing environments.
- Experience with version control and reproducible computational research practices, for example Git, workflow management systems or containerised environments.
- Experience with one or more areas relevant to the laboratory's research, such as transcriptomics, single-cell or spatial omics, alternative splicing, RNA metabolism, proteomics, imaging, multi-omics integration or statistical modelling of biological systems.
