About the role

1. Job Purpose

The Buyer is responsible for managing the procurement of materials, components, and services required for the production of custom cables and wire harnesses. The role ensures materials are purchased at the right quality, cost, quantity, and delivery timing to support production requirements and customer delivery schedules.

The Buyer will work closely with suppliers, Planning, Production, Engineering, Quality, Warehouse, and Finance to ensure an efficient and reliable supply chain.

2. Key Responsibilities

A. Purchasing & Procurement

  • Review purchase requisitions, MRP requirements, production schedules, and material requirements.
  • Prepare and issue Purchase Orders (POs) to approved suppliers.
  • Purchase materials based on demand, lead time, MOQ, inventory level, and production requirements.
  • Ensure materials are available on time to prevent production interruptions.
  • Follow up closely with suppliers on PO confirmation, delivery dates, and shipment status.
  • Expedite urgent or critical materials when required.
  • Monitor open POs and ensure timely delivery.

B. Cable & Wire Harness Materials

Manage purchasing activities for materials commonly used in custom cable and wire harness production, including:

  • Wires and cables
  • Terminals and contacts
  • Connectors
  • Housings
  • Heat shrink tubing
  • Braided sleeving
  • PVC / protective tubing
  • Labels and identification materials
  • Ferrules and lugs
  • Cable glands
  • Adhesive tapes
  • Clips, clamps, and other mechanical components
  • Custom electrical and electromechanical components
  • Packaging materials

C. Supplier Management

  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with suppliers.
  • Source and evaluate potential new suppliers.
  • Obtain quotations and conduct price comparisons.
  • Negotiate pricing, MOQ, lead time, payment terms, and other commercial conditions.
  • Monitor supplier performance in terms of Quality, Cost, Delivery, and Service (QCDS).
  • Work with Quality and Engineering teams to address supplier quality issues.
  • Support supplier qualification and development activities.
  • Maintain an updated approved supplier list.

D. Cost Control & Negotiation

  • Obtain competitive quotations for materials and components.
  • Conduct price comparison and cost analysis.
  • Negotiate with suppliers to achieve cost savings.

  • Monitor material price changes and market trends.
  • Identify cost-reduction opportunities through alternative suppliers, materials, MOQ optimization, and sourcing strategies.
  • Support annual cost reduction and purchasing improvement initiatives.

    • E. Inventory & Material Planning

    • Monitor inventory levels and material availability.
    • Coordinate with Material Planning / Production Planning to ensure sufficient materials for production.
    • Monitor excess, obsolete, slow-moving, and shortage materials.
    • Avoid over-purchasing and unnecessary inventory accumulation.
    • Review supplier lead times and recommend appropriate safety stock levels where required.

    F. Engineering & New Product Introduction (NPI) Support

    • Work with Engineering and NPI teams on new product material requirements.
    • Support sourcing of new components and materials for prototype and NPI projects.
    • Obtain quotations and lead times for new materials.
    • Coordinate sample and prototype material delivery.
    • Support Engineering in identifying alternative materials or suppliers where appropriate.
    • Ensure purchasing information is aligned with approved BOMs and specifications.

    G. Supplier Delivery & Quality Issues

    • Follow up on delayed or short shipments.
    • Coordinate with suppliers regarding material shortages and delivery recovery plans.
    • Escalate critical supply issues that may affect production or customer delivery.
    • Work with Quality on supplier non-conformance and corrective actions.
    • Monitor supplier on-time delivery performance.

    H. Purchasing Documentation & ERP

    • Maintain accurate purchase orders, supplier information, pricing, and delivery records.
    • Update ERP/MRP purchasing information when required.
    • Ensure purchasing transactions comply with company procedures and approval requirements.
    • Maintain proper documentation for audit and traceability purposes.
    • Prepare purchasing reports and supplier performance reports.

    3. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

    The Buyer may be measured based on:

    • Supplier On-Time Delivery (OTD)
    • Material shortage / line-down incidents
    • Purchase price variance
    • Cost savings achieved
    • Inventory level / inventory turns
    • Supplier quality performance
    • PO accuracy
    • PO cycle time
    • Supplier response time
    • Excess and obsolete inventory
    • Procurement compliance
    • Internal customer satisfaction

    4. Qualifications & Experience

    Education

    • Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Supply Chain Management, Purchasing, Business Administration, Engineering, or related discipline.

    Experience

    • Minimum 2–5 years of purchasing/buying experience, preferably in:

      • Wire harness manufacturing
      • Cable manufacturing
      • Electronics manufacturing
      • Electrical manufacturing
      • Automotive components
      • Connector manufacturing
      • EMS / contract manufacturing
      • Industrial manufacturing

    Experience with ERP systems such as CETEC, SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics, or other manufacturing ERP systems is an advantage.
