The Office of Inspector General (OIG) is a bureau of New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) dedicated to assuring that the activities and operations of the Department are conducted in accordance with Federal and State laws, rules, regulations, and Department policies and procedures. This is done by conducting audits, special inquiries, investigations, collecting information, and surveys.

As a valued new employee to NMDOT, you may be eligible to receive three (3) days of administrate leave upon your start date. This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government.

Why does the job exist?

The OIG provides objective and independent performance audit services and conducts routine database analysis on construction contract data. The OIG is also responsible for administering the Policy and Procedures Committee as provided in AD 116. The OIG is tasked with maintaining administrative directives and forms on the Department's internal network. It maintains records of claims for damages to Department property and coordinates with the Department's Accounting Services Division to collect monies recovered in accordance with the provisions of NMSA 1978, Section 67-7-10, with such monies deposited into the State Road Fund. The OIG provides reasonable assurance of federal compliance of allowable costs for contracts with engineering and design-related service contractors. It also performs prequalification application procedures as required by 18.27.5 NMAC, Contractor Prequalification Rule.

Conducts independent performance audits of transportation programs and operations to improve effectiveness and efficiencies, and to increase accountability.

Determines indirect cost rate compliance and contract eligibility for engineering and design consultants.

How does it get done?

The Internal Audit Section conducts performance audits. Internal audits are planned and performed in accordance with the Generally Accepted Government Auditing Standards (GAGAS) to improve the New Mexico Department of Transportation's efficiency, effectiveness, operations and accountability.

Strategic planning, extensive research, interviewing, and gathering evidence.

Detailed analysis of information, data, and control systems. Identify anomalies, deficiencies, and risks.

Extensive writing of work conducted, conclusions, and audit reports on findings and recommendations.

Who are the customers?

The direct client is NMDOT and the State Transportation Commission. Indirect customers are federal agencies, the State of New Mexico's governor, state auditor, state legislators and the public.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Auditing, or Business Administration and two (2) years directly related work experience in accounting, auditing, finance, and/or budgeting. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions

Office setting with some state travel, exposure to VDT and extensive personal computer use, extended periods of sitting, cellphone usage, and driving vehicles.
