School Nurse

About This Role

The School Nurse plays a central role in ensuring students are healthy and the school complies with state regulations. This position involves providing daily care to students, managing medications, maintaining health records, and serving as the primary contact for all health-related issues. The role requires effective communication with students, teachers, and families.

Responsibilities

• Meet all health-related concerns for students
• Provide daily, individual care to students with extensive physical needs
• Manage daily medications required by students
• Advise the Director of Operations and other school staff as needed regarding initiatives, processes, and systems to ensure a healthy school community
• Create a comforting and nurturing environment for ill students
• Draft communications as needed for pertinent health concerns applicable to the school community
• Immediately communicate suspicion of neglect or abuse to school leaders, including proposed plan of action
• Provide regular updates to school leaders regarding any contact with child welfare agencies (DCF)
• Provide regular updates to school leaders regarding conversations with outside doctors and insurance agents as it relates to ongoing and previous claims
• Effectively maintain supply inventory with advance warning provided for items that need to be ordered
• Maintain student health equipment
• Keep an organized work area
• Participate in necessary student health events that may occur on non-school days, e.g., New Student Registration
• Provide clear instructions and systems to Director of Operations, Office Manager, and Teachers for students who require medication
• Conduct state mandated health screenings annually to all students according to state standards
• Effectively and efficiently manage the systems for student health paperwork
• Ensure 100% collection of student health documentation for incoming new students
• Maintain physical student health files – organized and up-to-date
• Ensure electronic medical records are up-to-date with student health alerts
• Maintain the student health tracker spreadsheet indicating needed and missing documents
• Audit student health files annually
• Transfer all health materials and necessary information for student transfers between campuses
• Maintain the security of confidential information
• Collect and maintain student incident forms, ensuring that all applicable parties have documented all pertinent details
• Complete all government reports related to health (including, but not limited to, immunization report, Tuberculosis Report, etc.)
• Manage the collection and maintenance of health records for students and personnel information (e.g., receive forms and paperwork, track missing forms, manage databases, update emergency contact information, and keep records current)
