Safety Manager

About This Role

This Safety Manager position is crucial for protecting employees, strengthening workplace safety, and building a culture where safety is integral to all operations across a diverse organization. The role involves leading and coordinating the City's comprehensive safety program, providing guidance, education, and support to help departments identify and reduce workplace hazards.

Responsibilities

• Plan, coordinate, and implement a comprehensive Citywide safety and accident prevention program, including safety standards and regulations in accordance with federal, state, and City laws, regulations, policies, and procedures
• Build collaborative working relationships at all levels of the City and promote a culture of safety
• Respond to OSHA record requests and inspections
• Lead investigations of safety incidents and vehicle accidents to identify root causes, track for audit findings, and ensure timely and complete implementation of corrective actions
• Oversee DOT compliance, including random testing and vehicle accident prevention program
• Manage the processing and investigation of workers’ compensation claims; provide information to City Attorney for evaluation and settlement of subrogation claims
• Conduct safety audits and field inspections of job sites; recommend proper measures to ensure a safe workplace and work practices
• Oversee medical conversation program
• Develop safety training curriculum; coordinate scheduling and tracking with Human Resources; conduct training
• Monitor workers’ compensation cases and collaborate with Human Resources and third-party administrator to reduce employee lost time
• Stay current with interpretation of existing as well as new provisions of OSHA and other regulations; revise and update written programs
• Supervise the work of assigned personnel, including assigning and reviewing work, providing guidance, and conducting performance evaluations
• Ensure maintenance of all safety-related recordkeeping in compliance with OSHA and other regulations
• Perform related work as required

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in public health administration, occupational safety, industrial hygiene, or a related field
• Seven (7) to nine (9) years of experience in safety and/or occupational health-related work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, where one (1) year of relevant experience may substitute for one (1) year of required education
• Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office
• Ability to work collaboratively with diverse populations
• Valid U.S. Driver’s license
