Ruby on Rails Engineer

About This Role

This engineering role involves full-stack development that connects highly available cloud infrastructure with mission-critical mobile applications designed for tactical environments. You will be responsible for the core web applications, their underlying infrastructure, and the APIs that support users in disconnected, low-bandwidth, and offline settings. The position is for a self-driven engineer who can work across frontend, complex database design, and infrastructure as code, focusing on reliability for real-world missions.

Responsibilities

• Architect and scale robust, responsive frontends using React, ensuring exceptional performance, usability, and reliability
• Design, build, and maintain high-performance APIs using Ruby on Rails, ensuring reliability, maintainability, and response times for web, desktop, and mobile clients in challenging environments
• Own the data architecture by driving advanced PostgreSQL data modeling, complex schema migrations, query optimization, and indexing strategies for production databases at scale
• Manage and scale containerized services using Docker and Kubernetes, leveraging Terraform for infrastructure as code, and continuously harden and optimize automated CI/CD pipelines
• Foster a culture of high craftsmanship by delivering production-ready, thoroughly tested pull requests, participating in technical design reviews, and providing rigorous peer code reviews
• Collaborate across teams and partner with business development and mission success teams to troubleshoot technical escalations, ensuring users' critical field operations remain unblocked

Requirements

• 8+ years of professional full-stack experience designing, building, and maintaining production-grade applications at scale
• Passionate early adopter of AI-powered development tools (e.g., Claude Code, Codex, Cursor), with deep integration into daily workflow to accelerate development
• Deep expertise in Ruby (including Rails or similar frameworks) and SQL, with experience designing scalable services, data modeling, complex schema migrations, and optimizing low-performing queries
• Deep proficiency in building clean, modular component hierarchies using modern React, managing complex application state, and optimizing frontend performance for high concurrency apps
• Deep knowledge of PostgreSQL internals, advanced indexing strategies, query execution plans, transaction management, and performance tuning
• Hands-on experience using Docker and Kubernetes to containerize applications and manage orchestration, alongside Terraform to provision and manage cloud infrastructure as code
• Comfortable owning CI/CD pipelines and ensuring full-stack applications safely build, scale, and deploy to production environments
• Proven ability to manage own productivity and maintain high feature velocity in a fully remote, asynchronous environment
