About the role
Utilizes the nursing process for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation to provide safe, therapeutic care. Functions as a member of the interdisciplinary and nursing teams; carries out established nursing procedures and performs related duties as required; performs nursing care for patients with more complex needs with assistance and supervision. Assists with the management of patient care administered by other members of the nursing team.
Under the general supervision of the Unit Director and in accordance with established protocols, the Registered Nurse coordinates pre-operative clearance for complex surgical and procedural patients. This includes obtaining outside medical records, collaborating closely with APPs, physicians, and residents, providing patient education, and partnering with multiple surgical practices. Clinical responsibilities also include pre-procedure symptom assessment and follow-up, as well as performing phlebotomy, EKGs, and vital sign collection.
Responsible for maintaining the knowledge and abilities essential to the performance of stated behaviors. Carries out legal responsibilities within the scope of the Nurse Practice Act. Accountable to the NURSE SVC SUPV 2 for overall work performance.
Pediatric Prepare is an outpatient Pre-Anesthesia clinic. APPs conduct health assessments obtain a history and physical to maximize children’s safety during anesthesia and to help children understand and cope with coming to the hospital for a surgery or procedure. Our ultimate goal is to reduce the morbidity of surgery / anesthesia, to reduce anxiety for surgery patients, and to deliver superior customer service, focusing on optimal pre-surgical / pre-procedural preparation. The Pediatric Anesthesia service evaluates and treats post-procedural pain for patients admitted to the hospital.
- Provide/coordinate care for pre-surgical/pre-procedural patients by performing nursing assessments, managing patients’ overall care plan, and providing nursing interventions for disease/symptom management. Acts as a direct support to the pediatric prepare staff, and anesthesiologists.
- Act as a referral liaison with other services, departments and external services to assist in the coordination of care among multiple health care providers and community agencies, and across healthcare settings, including pre-op/pre-procedure care, ambulatory settings, and inpatient services as needed.
- Perform comprehensive assessment and manage post-procedural pain in infants, children, and adolescents admitted to the hospital. Administer complex pharmacological interventions and manage specialized equipment. Participate in multidisciplinary clinical rounds. Work with patients, their families, and the multidisciplinary medical team.
Required qualifications:
- Minimum five-year in-patient RN experience Pre-op and PACU experience at an academic medical center
- Minimum 1 year Ambulatory Clinic experience
- Ability to orient and work at any UCSF location
Preferred qualifications:
- BSN
- Experience in Cardiovascular specialty
Licenses/Certifications:
- Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of California.
- Current American Heart Association BLS certification
- Current American Heart Association PALS certification.
