About the role
Job Summary
The Department of Urology at the University of Michigan seeks a Research Laboratory Specialist Senior to support an active translational research program in genitourinary oncology, with an emphasis on biomarker discovery and validation in prostate and kidney cancer.
Responsibilities*
The successful candidate will independently design, execute, and troubleshoot molecular and genomic experiments, including nucleic acid extraction and quality control, targeted and next-generation sequencing library preparation, and multiplex gene expression assays performed on patient-derived blood, urine, and tissue specimens. Responsibilities include developing and refining laboratory protocols, performing and interpreting analyses of complex genomic datasets, maintaining rigorous documentation and data integrity standards, overseeing biospecimen processing and inventory, and preparing figures, summaries, and written materials for manuscripts, grant applications, and sponsor progress reports. The position also supports correlative science associated with investigator-initiated and cooperative group clinical trials, working closely with clinical research coordinators to align specimen collection with protocol requirements.
This is a senior-level scientific role requiring substantial independence and judgment. The individual will contribute to experimental design and interpretation, evaluate and implement new methodologies, identify and resolve technical problems without direct supervision, and help set priorities across concurrent projects to meet sponsor timelines. The role involves regular collaboration with investigators and staff across the Rogel Cancer Center, the Michigan Center for Translational Pathology, Pathology, and Biostatistics, and includes day-to-day guidance and technical training of students, residents, and fellows working in the laboratory.
Required Qualifications*
- Candidates should hold a PhD in molecular biology, genetics, cancer biology, bioinformatics, or a closely related field, with demonstrated experience in molecular laboratory techniques and analysis of high-dimensional genomic data.
- 5-6 years of related experience. i.e., published in a field of specialty and academic knowledge in a field or discipline.
Desired Qualifications*
Experience with cancer biology, clinical or translational research, or computational analysis using R or Python is preferred.
