Job Description and Duties
Under general direction of the Research Data Supervisor II in the Data Monitoring & Statistics Branch, of the Research, Evaluation and Data Insights (REDI) Division, the Research Data Specialist I will work independently and provide expert guidance on specialized and complex projects involving intense investigation into Department of State Hospitals (DSH) data. The incumbent will act as a subject matter expert in data assessment, data extraction, data reconciliation, and development for DSH reports and actively participate in division projects and other assigned work efforts. Areas will include developing and refining methodologies for data collection, data cleaning, and ongoing reconciliation for reports issued on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis, conducting research involving patient level data and preparing formal reports and presentations to management. Duties require regular collaboration and coordination with executive management, DSH facility staff and Sacramento-based staff.
This function requires advanced use of Microsoft Excel, Power Pivot, Power Queries, and Word, intermediate to advanced use of SQL; and intermediate to advanced use of PowerBI and/or Tableau.
Working Conditions
- DSH-Sacramento is located at an 11-floor high rise building.
- This position reports to the Allenby Building in Sacramento. A hybrid Telework schedule, consistent with the State of California's in-office requirement, may be considered with prior approval from management. The incumbent may also be required to travel throughout California as needed, with prior notice.

- Please describe your experience with data cleaning, validation, analysis and report development. Which tools (Excel, Power Query, SQL, etc.) did you use? How did you collaborate with other stakeholders outside your team to complete the task?
- Describe your experience in developing and/or modifying interactive dashboards or other standardized reports to support and enhance reporting function for organizations. Please refer to the tools (Power BI, Tableau, etc.) that you used.
- Please add any qualifications or accomplishments that would make you the best candidate for this position.
