Duties

As a Research Chemist you will:

  • Design and conduct laboratory studies as part of larger research projects dealing with environmental health.
  • Plan projects, advise on methods and procedures, and obtain information to procure equipment and supplies.
  • Prepare scientific articles and technical reports for publication in national and international public health journals.

Qualifications

Basic Qualification Requirements:

Degree: Physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.

OR

Combination of education and experience which includes course work equivalent to a major in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering, that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Additional Qualification:   In addition to meeting the Basic Qualification Requirements for Research Chemist, GS-1320-12, candidates must also:

A. Have one year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service, to include experience in the planning and conducting of laboratory experiments and analyses using analytical instrumentation to solve problems in occupational exposure assessment; familiarity with a broad range of sampling and analytical methods for occupational exposure assessment; and experience with contracts for the procurement of goods and industrial hygiene laboratory services.

OR

B.  Have completed a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.

OR

C.  Have a combination of specialized experience and graduate level education that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.

Documenting experience: In accordance with Office of Personnel Management policy, federal employees are assumed to have gained experience by performing duties and responsibilities appropriate for their official series and grade level as described in their position description. Experience that would not normally be part of the employee's position is creditable, however, when documented by satisfactory evidence, such as a signed memorandum from the employee's supervisor or an SF-50 or SF-52 documenting an official detail or other official assignment. The documentation must indicate whether the duties were performed full time or, if part time, the percentage of times the other duties were performed. It is expected that this documentation is included in the employee's official personnel record. In order to receive credit for experience in your resume that is not within the official series and grade level of your official position, you must provide a copy of the appropriate documentation of such experience as indicated above.
