Research Associate, Research Assistant Associate, Research Scientist

About This Role

This Research Associate position in the Venkatesh lab at the Institute for Systems Biology offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to research focused on understanding how gut microbial metabolites influence human physiology and health. The role involves supporting daily lab operations and research through bench work, experimental planning and troubleshooting, and active participation in ongoing projects.

Responsibilities

• Perform basic mouse husbandry and phenotyping
• Conduct molecular biology techniques, including cloning, recombinant protein expression, and purification
• Prepare lab reagents such as buffers, media, and plates
• Maintain cell lines by propagating, expanding, and freezing cells using sterile techniques
• Train junior members on laboratory protocols and procedures
• Manage administrative responsibilities related to lab operations, including safety and ordering

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, microbiology, or a relevant scientific discipline
• One or more years of relevant research experience in a laboratory environment
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Ability to keep accurate records with attention to detail
• Scientific curiosity and willingness to learn new techniques
• Commitment to performing rigorous, high-quality science
• Capability to work flexible hours to accommodate experimental schedules
• Willingness to adapt to changing work requirements
• Baseline technical skills and ability to communicate effectively and appropriately over email and intranet/forum
• Functional proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Slack
