Regulatory Affairs Specialist

About This Role

The Regulatory Affairs Specialist ensures that the company's food ingredients, flavours, and seasoning solutions comply with South African and relevant export-market regulations. The role involves close collaboration with R&D, Quality, Procurement, Sales, and customers to provide accurate regulatory guidance and documentation.

Responsibilities

• Review formulations and raw materials for regulatory compliance
• Interpret and apply South African food legislation and customer requirements
• Prepare and review product specifications, ingredient declarations, nutritional information, and allergen statements
• Assess product labels and claims for compliance
• Complete customer regulatory questionnaires and technical documentation
• Manage Halal, Kosher, and other certification requirements where applicable
• Maintain regulatory documents for raw materials and finished products
• Monitor changes in food legislation and communicate their impact to the business
• Support product development by advising on permitted additives, colours, sweeteners, flavourings, and usage limits
• Conduct regulatory assessments for products intended for export markets
• Liaise with customers, suppliers, certification bodies, and regulatory authorities when required
• Support audits and maintain accurate regulatory records and databases

Requirements

• Relevant tertiary qualification in Food Science, Food Technology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, or a related field
• Approximately 3

-5 years

• regulatory experience within the food, ingredients, flavour, or seasoning industry
• Sound knowledge of South African food legislation, including labelling, additives, allergens, and nutritional requirements
• Experience with customer specifications and regulatory documentation
• Strong attention to detail and the ability to interpret technical legislation
• Good written and verbal communication skills
• Able to manage multiple projects and work closely with technical and commercial teams

Nice to have:

• Familiarity with flavouring and seasoning regulations
• Experience with export-market regulations
