Assignment Type: PRN, Short & Long-Term Assignments

Pay: $50.00/Hour Setting: School Health Program

Protouch Staffing is seeking compassionate, experienced, and dependable Registered Nurses (RNs) to join our School Health Program whom are Certified by the State of Texas to perform hearing & vision screening in Houston, TX.

This is an excellent opportunity for an RN who enjoys working with children and wants to use their clinical expertise in a rewarding school-based healthcare environment . We are ONLY seeking RNs who are certified by the State of Texas to perform Vision and Hearing Screenings .

You will work closely with students, families, teachers, school administrators, and the RN Program Leadership team to promote student health, safety, wellness, and academic success.

Primary Responsibilities As a School Nurse/RN, you will provide nursing services and support the district's school health program while ensuring students receive appropriate and timely healthcare.

Responsibilities May Include

  • Perform vision screenings in accordance with Texas requirements
  • Perform hearing screenings in accordance with Texas requirements
  • Identify screening results that require referral or additional evaluation
  • Provide first aid and appropriate nursing care to students
  • Assess student health concerns and determine appropriate nursing interventions
  • Monitor vital signs and respond promptly to medical needs
  • Administer medications as prescribed and monitor for adverse reactions
  • Provide clinic, classroom, or 1:1 nursing care for students with complex medical needs
  • Provide specialized care for students requiring tracheostomy, ventilator, G-tube, and other skilled nursing interventions
  • Respond to medical emergencies and initiate appropriate lifesaving measures
  • Maintain accurate and confidential student health records
  • Develop and implement appropriate healthcare plans as directed
  • Collaborate with parents, teachers, administrators, physicians, and other healthcare professionals
  • Communicate student health concerns and recommendations to appropriate school personnel
  • Provide health education to students, families, and school staff
  • Provide guidance and training to unlicensed personnel when appropriate
  • Participate in IEP/ARD meetings and student health-related conferences
  • Assist with crisis intervention and emergency response
  • Support compliance with Texas school health requirements
  • Complete required documentation for Medicaid/SHARS billing
  • Maintain compliance with district policies, nursing standards, and applicable regulations

Required Qualifications

  • Current, unrestricted Texas Registered Nurse (RN) license or compact/multistate RN license

  • Minimum 2 years of active RN licensure/clinical experience

  • Graduate of an accredited Registered Nursing program

  • Certified by the State of Texas to perform Vision and Hearing Screenings

  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) CPR/AED certification

  • Ability to independently assess and respond to medical emergencies

  • Ability to perform CPR and provide emergency interventions within the RN's scope of practice

  • Ability to administer emergency medications and other lifesaving measures according to established protocols

  • Completion of required school district fingerprinting/background requirements

  • Complete immunization documentation, including:

  • MMR

  • Varicella

  • Hepatitis B

  • Tdap

  • Flu

  • Current TB skin test or chest X-ray

Preferred Experience

  • 2+ years of experience in pediatric nursing, school nursing, community health, public health, or a related clinical setting
  • Previous experience working directly with school-age children
  • Previous experience performing vision and hearing screenings
  • Experience caring for students with complex medical needs
  • Familiarity with IEP/ARD processes and SHARS/Medicaid documentation

Special Knowledge & Skills The ideal candidate will have:

  • Strong knowledge of professional nursing procedures and practices

  • Knowledge of pediatric and school-age healthcare needs

  • Excellent assessment, critical-thinking, and clinical decision-making skills

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • Excellent documentation and organizational abilities

  • Computer proficiency and experience maintaining electronic health records

  • Ability to operate healthcare equipment such as:

  • Audiometers

  • Otoscopes

  • Blood pressure equipment

  • Thermometers

  • Pulse oximeters

  • Other basic clinical equipment

  • Ability to work independently while functioning effectively as part of a school health team

  • Ability to establish positive relationships with students, parents, teachers, and administrators

Physical & Mental Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and assist students as needed
  • Ability to lift and/or physically assist students when required by the assignment
  • Ability to respond quickly and appropriately during medical emergencies
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in stressful situations
  • Ability to manage multiple student healthcare needs while maintaining accurate documentation
  • Compassion, patience, professionalism, and a genuine commitment to student health and safety
