Registered Nurse - Intensive Care Unit

About This Role

This night-shift post on the cardiac ward pairs patient care with mentoring new nurses. The Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH) ICU is a 29-bed unit with high acuity and occupancy, caring for critically ill patients from various medical and surgical programs. The Registered Nurse is specially trained to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care, working collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to achieve positive patient outcomes and quality care improvements.

Responsibilities

• Provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities, and populations
• Take necessary steps to ensure patient safety and well-being
• Utilize nursing processes through critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making
• Teach, counsel, and advocate on behalf of patients and their families
• Play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion, and maintenance
• Provide safe, quality patient and family-centered care reflecting shared vision and values
• Perform a variety of nursing duties
• Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team, patients, and their families
• Administer nursing care safely and effectively, according to hospital policies and nursing care standards
• Participate in the Code Blue and Rapid Response Teams for the Royal Alexandra Hospital
• Identify own learning needs and seek guidance to fill knowledge gaps
• Demonstrate a commitment to ongoing professional growth and development
• Demonstrate a commitment to providing quality patient and family-centered care in a team environment
• Perform Charge Nurse duties following successful orientation to the role

Requirements

• Completion of an accredited nursing education program
• Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA)
• Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP) certification
• Recent completion of a recognized Critical Care course with 1 year of adult critical care RN experience
• Strong knowledge, assessment, communication, organizational, and patient care skills to pass the Clinical Assessment and continue employment in the Critical Care Program
• Commitment to full-time employment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for a minimum of one year post-OPACCA
• One year full-time employment post-OPACCA to maintain eligibility within the department
• Recent experience within an acute care environment, either as a nursing student or an RN
• Experience working with diverse communities or groups (i.e. ethno-cultural, racialized, faith-based, 2S LGBTQI+, vulnerable, marginalized, persons with disabilities, etc.)
