Referral Coordinator

About This Role

Referral Coordinators play a crucial role in maintaining the continuity of care within the healthcare system. This position manages and facilitates the process of referring patients to other healthcare providers or services, ensuring they receive the appropriate care. The role involves following referral procedure guidelines, obtaining prior authorization, processing referrals, and scheduling specialist appointments per provider requests.

Responsibilities

• Stay updated on healthcare regulations and insurance requirements
• Provide training and education to other staff members as needed
• Review patient records and assessments
• Assess the specific requirements of the patient's condition
• Collaborate with referring healthcare providers
• Communicate with specialists or service providers
• Verify patient insurance coverage for referral services
• Obtain necessary pre-authorization or precertification from insurance providers
• Maintain accurate and organized records of all referrals, including relevant details
• Enter and update referral data in the electronic system as appropriate
• Document the reasons for the referral, dates, and specialist information
• Explain the referral process to patients, including reasons for the referral and what to expect
• Resolve any challenges or obstacles that may arise during the referral process
• Ensure the referral process complies with healthcare regulations and privacy policies, such as HIPAA

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Minimum of one year of work experience with referrals or related medical office experience
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Excellent customer service skills
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail

• Experience with EMR systems
• Spanish language skills
• Creole language skills
