Recreational Therapist

About This Role

Recreational therapists help patients with disabilities or illnesses maintain their physical and emotional well-being using leisure activities. This full-time position involves facilitating group and individual sessions, assisting with program development, and supporting community integration outings for adults with severe and persistent mental illness.

Responsibilities

• Facilitate creative, educational, psychosocial, recreational, and activity-based groups that effectively engage residents and support their treatment plans
• Participate in community integration outings and monitor residents to support successful integration and involvement with the community
• Meet with residents on an individual basis as needed
• Participate in theme day and holiday events, and work with team members to collaborate and assist in department development
• Effectively manage groups and provide verbal de-escalation when needed
• Provide required documentation related to conducting individual sessions, activities assessments, monthly, and quarterly reports
• Provide therapeutic counseling support in all aspects of the position
• Participate in required in-service training and staff development as needed
• Engage in crisis prevention procedures for the safety, health, and welfare of the residents and staff
• Stand for periods of time, bend, kneel, lift, carry, and walk swiftly or run as needed

Requirements

• Certified or working towards certification in recreational therapy
• Registered or eligible for registration as a recreation therapist by the California Board of Parks and Recreation Certification or the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification
