Duties
MAJOR DUTIES: Serves as lead lifeguard for two protected beaches in the park and is responsible for public safety, water assists and rescues, enforcing beach regulations, assisting visitors with first aid, providing informational services and interpretation to beach users. Supervises fresh water and ocean beach operations.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Incumbent must be able to swim long distances in open surf. He/she is expected to run in sand and maintain endurance to cope with saving a human life in strong ocean currents. Unusual exertions in rescue and first aid operations require endurance, emotional and mental stability.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The environment is an ocean or fresh water lakeside beach area. Extremes in temperature are common. Ambient air temperatures of 90+ degrees F are recorded every summer and surf temperatures can be as low as 48 degrees F. Incumbent is expected to sit through mild rainstorms and wind blown sand.

As a result, Acadia National Park is one of the most visited national parks in the United States. Acadia National Park protects more than 47,000 acres of lakes, ponds, mountains, and ocean shoreline along the coast of Maine. The 27-mile Park Loop Road system offers outstanding views of the park's ocean shoreline, coastal forests, and mountain silhouettes. At Acadia you can explore the park's scenic 45-mile carriage road system or hike through forests and up mountains on 125 miles of historic hiking trails.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS*:* To be eligible for this position, you must possess the qualifying specialized experience and/or education as well as selective factors as described in the occupational/assessment questionnaire and as outlined below.
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement, Tuesday, May 30, 2017. Qualifying experience may be obtained in the private or public sectors. You must include dates of employment (month and year) and hours worked per week to receive credit for your work experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. You will not receive credit for experience that does not indicate the exact hours worked per week or is listed as "varies". Part-time hours are prorated.
To qualify based on experience, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level. Specialized experience is defined as experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to perform successfully the duties of the position and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience for this position would include performing lead lifeguard duties, group leader, counselor, teacher's aid in elementary school recreation or physical education program, summer aid in a state park or national park.
As a general rule, education is not creditable above GS-5 for most positions covered by this standard; however, graduate education may be credited in those few instances where the graduate education is directly related to the work of the position. To qualify based on education, you must have completed 9 semester hours of graduate education in courses directly related to the position (e.g. basic psychology, group dynamics, physical education, outdoor recreation, etc.). Submit a copy of your transcript or list of courses with credit hours, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking.
