Radiation Therapist

About This Role

This role involves assisting with the daily patient flow in Radiation Oncology, developing new patient care processes, and improving operations. The Radiation Therapist treats patients with prescribed doses of ionizing radiation using specialized equipment, prepares the treatment room, explains procedures, positions patients, and monitors them during therapy. They also simulate patient treatment, deliver prescribed radiation doses, and design custom treatment devices.

Responsibilities

• Assist with the daily patient flow of the Radiation Oncology clinical location
• Evaluate and develop new processes for patient care
• Assist with other activities to improve Radiation Oncology operations
• Treat patients with prescribed doses of ionizing radiation supplied and controlled through specialized radiation equipment
• Prepare treatment room
• Explain procedures to patients
• Position patients and administer treatments
• Monitor patients during therapy sessions to ensure comfort and observe changes in condition
• Simulate patient treatment according to the treatment plan
• Deliver prescribed doses of ionizing radiation supplied and controlled through specialized radiation equipment
• Design and construct custom treatment devices for individual patients
• Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care appropriate to the ages of the patients served

Requirements

• Current Radiation Therapy license issued by IEMA Department of Nuclear Safety
• ARRT Radiology registered or successful completion of ARRT Radiology registry within 6 months of hire
• Knowledge of radiation therapy procedures and equipment operation, and of physics and patient care techniques at a level acquired through an approved program in radiation therapy technology, usually lasting one year beyond radiography training
• Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, allied health personnel, and other Medical Center personnel when explaining procedures and gathering and exchanging patient-related information
• Analytical skills necessary to provide accurate care instructions to patients, interpret physicians' prescriptions for treatment course, and effectively duplicate treatment plan
