Radiation Therapist

About This Role

The Radiation Therapist is a key member of the Radiation Oncology team, providing direct patient care in the Radiation Oncology Center. This role involves administering prescribed courses of radiation therapy, understanding complex medical prescriptions, and working effectively under pressure. The therapist ensures quality patient care aligned with each patient's diagnosis and treatment needs.

Responsibilities

• Accurately and efficiently review and/or administer daily prescribed Radiation Therapy treatments to patients assigned to the treatment unit at a speed consistent with patient scheduling
• Observe and adhere to all department policies concerning Radiation Therapy treatment procedures
• Prepare room and equipment for patient by gathering all necessary equipment, supplies, and setup devices
• Set appropriate treatment unit parameters
• Activate the treatment unit and deliver the prescribed dose of radiation
• Maintain visual and/or audible communication with the patient during treatment
• Obtain appropriate port films on patients when prescribed; make adjustments in field placement as needed
• Throughout the course of Radiation Therapy, monitor patients for unusual reactions and events, and report same to Clinical Director and Radiation Oncologist
• Keep immobilization devices in a clean and orderly manner and utilize the devices as prescribed by the Radiation Oncologist
• Maintain current knowledge of therapeutic procedures performed in the Radiation Oncology Department
• Possess basic knowledge of Radiation Oncology equipment function to provide for minor repair and troubleshooting for problems; water and gas levels, laser alignment, etc.
• Be proficient in the utilization of all Radiation Oncology equipment in the department including CT(s)
• Utilize appropriate body mechanics in moving/lifting patients and equipment to prevent injury to patients and to self
• Apply safety principles in the performance of position responsibilities
• Record Radiation Oncology charges as procedures are performed
• Keep records of machine down time and maintain machine fault list report
• Assist the Supervisor in placing and scheduling service calls
• Ensure proper hand off of responsibilities once their task is completed
• Ensure that all medical records are accurate and complete within the system for all patients
• Perform other position related duties as assigned
