Psychiatrist (Emergency Room Director)

Duties
This Psychiatrist assumes role of Director of Emergency Department Mental Health Service sharing clinical responsibilities for management of inpatient and outpatient Veterans with a multidisciplinary team consisting of other psychiatrists, and/or psychiatric nurse practitioners, psychologists, mental health social workers, physician assistants and mental health nurses. The psychiatrist is responsible and accountable to the Chief, Mental Health Service who gives general guidance. The psychiatrist works closely with colleagues to provide comprehensive, state-of-the-art inpatient mental health care and the implementation of principles of Advanced Clinic Access in mental health.

The position includes the following duties and responsibilities:

• The psychiatrist will provide consultation and direct care for outpatients manifesting a wide variety of psychiatric and psychosocial problems.
• The psychiatrist provides initial and ongoing assessment of new patients, including diagnosis, medication management and treatment plans.
• The psychiatrist documents clinical activity in the patients electronic medical record and responds to emergency consultation request from the clinic admission area and from other clinics in the medical center or community based outpatient clinic (CBOC).
• Depending upon the assigned duty station, the psychiatrist rotates on call duties with other psychiatrists for after-hours/weekends for inpatient admissions and emergency consultation on a regular rotation. As time permits, the psychiatrist may participate in research projects.
• The psychiatrist will be encouraged to become involved in the education of psychiatric residents during their rotations on site.
• Depending on fluctuating staffing patterns and workloads, the psychiatrist may be assigned to other programs within Mental Health Service Line.

Work Schedule: Monday-Thursday, Saturday or Monday-Friday, 07:30 am - 4:00 pm, Occasional Weekends and Evenings may be required.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements

• Citizenship of the United States. Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with Department of Veterans Affairs policy.
• Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
• Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
• Completion of a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Physical requirements outlined below.

Preferred Experience:

1. Board certified or working toward board certification in Psychiatry.
2. Four year accredited Psychiatry Resident Program.
3. Basic Life Support (BLS). Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
