Psychiatrist

Duties

This position is located at the Chillicothe Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The Psychiatrist will provide general clinical psychiatric services to Veterans and include on-call services. The Psychiatrist will treat common patient diagnoses including anxiety disorder, Post-Traumatic Disorder, Major Depression, and other mood disorders, Substance Use Disorders, Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia, and other serious Mental Illnesses, Dementia, and mental disorder related to Traumatic Brain Injuries. The Psychiatrist sees patients in an inpatient or outpatient setting; performs initial psychiatric interviews; completes initial diagnostic assessments; sees patients in follow-up; provides appropriate psychiatric care (to include prescribing medications and providing psychotherapy); completes associated charting and otherwise complies with VA guidelines and policies regarding provision of care. .xml:namespace prefix = "o" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" / The work requires administrative and practical knowledge as a Psychiatrist.

Duties include but are not limited to:

·      Provide direct clinical supervision of mid-level providers, psychiatric advanced practice nurses or physician assistant, and other staff as appropriate.

·      Exercise judgment in the selection of or adaption of standard and accepted clinical theories, techniques, and practices in treating patients or developing new techniques and programs for treatment.

·      Provides mental health treatment coordination to patients assigned to him/her as their mental health treatment coordinator.

·     Care for the patients of other providers when those providers are on sick leave or annual leave.

·     Cooperate and participate in medical studies or functions related to quality of care, peer review, improvement, and performance improvement at the direction of the Chief Psychiatrist and Mental Health care Line Manager.

**Work Schedule:**Monday - Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. Some evening and weekends may apply. After-hours call responsibilities are minimal and generally limited to emergency situations when pre-arranged call coverage by other employed and fee-basis physicians has fallen through. Such call is assigned in rotation according to an emergency call roster.

 
**Statement of Duties Title:**General Clinical Psychiatrist. Mental Health. Psychiatrist are considered medical personnel and in addition will be assigned duties under a Scope of Practice and in addition, may be assigned specific clinical privileges.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements**:   xml:namespace prefix = "o" /**

• Must be proficient in written and spoken English.

• Must be a citizen of the United States (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens)

• Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.

• Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

  (1) Physicians (Except Residents). Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. The physician must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure. The facility Director may waive this licensure requirement if the physician is to serve in a country other than the United States and the physician has licensure in that country.xml:namespace prefix = "o" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /

  (2) Residents. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia before the second year of VA residency, or meet any licensure, registration or other equivalent requirements established for residents of non-VA hospitals with which the VA facility is affiliated for training purposes. The resident must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.

  (3) Impaired Licensure. A physician who has, or has ever had, any license(s) revoked, suspended, denied, restricted, limited, or issued/placed in a probationary status may be appointed only in accordance with the provisions of chapter 3, section B, paragraph 14 of this part.

  (4) Waiver of Licensure. Licensure may be waived by the Under Secretary for Health or designee in Central Office for individuals in research or academic assignments involving no direct patient care responsibilities in accordance with current regulations.

• Must have completed a first-year residency Internship, or its equivalent.

  First-Year Residency (Internship). Completed a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed. For a VA resident, the appropriate Deans Committee and Resident Review Board may recommend appointment on the basis of the candidate's acceptability for residency training. Approved residencies are:

  (1) Those approved by the Council on Medical Education and Hospitals, American Medical Association, in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or

  (2) Other residencies or their equivalents which the Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training. The Board may determine that the residency requirement has been met if the candidate has completed 1 year of postgraduate education.

• Grade Requirement.

  Associate Grade. Meet the basic requirements. The individuals qualifies to perform general duties under supervision.

  Full Grade. Meet the requirements for Associate grade and have completed additional training, such as the second year of an accredited residency, and/or experience which has qualified the individual to perform general duties without supervision.

        Intermediate Grade. Meet the requirements for Full grade, and have completed additional training such as an accredited   

       residency in an area not directly related to the specialty are to which the individual is being assigned, and/or experience which

       has qualified the individual to perform general duties and some specialized functions and procedures without supervision.

       Senior Grade. Meet the requirements for Intermediate grade and have demonstrated recognized professional attainment 

        such as:

         (1) Past or present faculty appointment in an approved medical school

or

         (2) Completion of an accredited residency program in the specialist area to which the individual is being assigned or in a r

         related area,

or

         (3) Current eligibility to sit for the board certification examination in the specialty area to which the individual is

         being assigned or in a related area,

or

           (4) Comparable achievements in clinical, educational, administrative or research activities.

Preferred Experience:

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social).  Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.  You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
