Psychiatrist

About This Role

This role as a Psychiatrist within the Student Health Center (SHC) involves providing compassionate and culturally competent psychiatric care to students, supporting their academic success and personal development. The position contributes to the SHC's mission by evaluating and diagnosing mental health problems, prescribing medication, and offering crisis intervention.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate and diagnose mental health problems
• Order and interpret diagnostic tests as needed
• Prescribe medication when needed and follow up on treatment
• Counsel patients
• Provide mental health crisis intervention and management when needed
• Refer to and consult with other professionals and providers as needed
• Provide consultation and expert opinion
• Collaborate with others in CAPS in the care of patients
• Participate in the SHC’s continuous quality improvement activities
• Provide evaluation of mental status
• Diagnose psychiatric conditions according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) criteria
• Perform clinical evaluations, detailed intake assessments and appropriate tests to diagnose and manage psychological and psychiatric conditions
• Develop treatment plans for patients
• Provide consultation regarding advisability of treatment with various therapeutic options including psychiatric medication and the management of patients with chronic psychiatric conditions
• Provide immediate care for acute psychiatric conditions including appropriate arrangement of hospitalization through appropriate community resources
• Establish, diagnose, and document the health care plan and prognosis using Problem Lists and Medication Lists
• Facilitate continuity of care
• Document all care in SHC Electronic Health Records
• Maintain strict patient confidentiality
• Advise staff regarding use of appropriate community resources for patients who may need long-term counseling and/or psychiatric care
• Provide counseling for patients concerning their psychiatric condition
• Participate in Quality Assurance activities
• Participate in case conferences with CAPS
• Utilize accepted professional practice guidelines for general psychiatry and observe the ethics and standards of the American Psychiatric Association and the California Medical Association to diagnose, prescribe, and manage medications for the treatment of psychiatric disorders of CSULA patients
• Assist CAPS and SHC develop and implement processes for the provision of mental health care to the campus community
• Provide Emergency/Disaster care during a campus disaster

Requirements

• Graduation from a medical school and completion of one or more residency programs and/or fellowships accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or equivalent in a specialty appropriate to their assigned specialty duties
• Valid license to practice medicine in the State of California
• Current board certification in an American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA) specialty or subspecialty appropriate for their assigned specialty duties
• Valid Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) registration and number for prescribing controlled substances
• Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator (CPR/AED) certification as appropriate for the assigned duties
• Thorough knowledge to effectively apply principles and methods essential to psychiatry, and the diagnosis and treatment of common medical disorders, and in the assessment and response to emergency situations
• Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws and regulations pertaining to the medical field and psychiatry
• Knowledge of applicable professional ethics and standards which include but not limited to the County Medical Society, California Medical Association, and the American Medical Association
• Ability and specialized skills to serve as a mentor and resource consultant for other health center personnel and establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of medical practitioners and specialist, as well as students, faculty and staff
• Demonstrated interest and/or ability to work in a multicultural/multiethnic environment
• Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required before an offer of employment
• Must reside in the State of California upon date of hire

Nice to have:

• Prior/current affiliation with a hospital or outpatient clinic
• Experience working in a student health services setting combined with strong interest and knowledge in working with college-age patients
• Ability and specialized skills to serve as a mentor and resource consultant for other SHC personnel and maintain effective working relationships with others
• Experience in use of electronic health recording system

Important Details

• Schedule: Full-time, Monday - Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. alternating Friday off
• Work format: hybrid option available
