About This Role
This Project Analyst role is responsible for providing accurate and timely financial management information to support the Project Management group. The position involves running and maintaining recurring project reports, performing financial analysis to identify variances and trends, and working with cross-functional stakeholders to validate project financial data. The Project Analyst also supports Project Managers with cost reporting, forecast and budget analysis, and the documentation required for accurate milestone invoicing.
Responsibilities
- Assist with bid reviews by evaluating cost assumptions, revenue recognition, cash flow, payment milestones, contingencies, and financial risks
- Perform independent, risk-based reviews of project financial records, transactions, forecasts, commitments, accruals, and supporting documentation to assess accuracy, completeness, and compliance with established controls
- Conduct detailed financial forensic analyses to trace anomalies and determine the root causes of cost, revenue, margin, cash-flow, and schedule-related variances
- Reconcile actual costs, purchase commitments, accruals, progress, and remaining scope to approved budgets and forecasts; identify data-entry, timing, coding, allocation, and process-control errors
- Develop and monitor leading indicators, exception reports, trend analyses, and risk thresholds to identify potential forecast misses, margin erosion, cash-flow constraints, or unplanned cost exposure before the related activities occur
- Challenge forecast assumptions by comparing planned labor, material, subcontract, production, and milestone activity with actual performance, open commitments, historical trends, and current project risks
- Prepare clear variance explanations that distinguish timing differences from permanent cost impacts and quantify the effect on revenue, margin, cash flow, estimate at completion, and milestone billing
- Document findings, retain an auditable support trail, recommend corrective actions and control improvements, and track agreed actions through closure
- Escalate significant financial anomalies, unsupported assumptions, control gaps, and emerging forecast risks to Project Management and Finance with concise, evidence-based recommendations
- Maintain complete, accurate, and audit-ready project files, including contracts, purchase orders, variation and change orders, payment milestones, approvals, meeting records, and supporting financial documentation
- Validate contract values, billing schedules, milestone completion evidence, and customer requirements; coordinate with Project Management and Accounting to support timely and accurate milestone invoicing
- Run and analyze weekly and monthly activity, work-in-progress, purchase commitment, actual-cost, forecast, cash-flow, and exception reports; reconcile discrepancies across source systems and supporting records
