About the role

The PRN Histology Technician provides histology services as needed to support outpatient surgical and procedural operations. Prepares tissue specimens for routine and special procedures that aid in confirming patient diagnoses, including processing, embedding, sectioning, and staining surgical and biopsy specimens. Work is performed in accordance with established laboratory protocols, quality standards, and regulatory requirements. The PRN Histology Technician supports laboratory needs based on variable scheduling, specimen volume, and operational demand. Work is performed under the supervision of laboratory or departmental leadership and requires flexibility to work variable shifts based on outpatient surgical schedules and coverage needs.

  • Working knowledge of histology principles, tissue processing methods, staining techniques, and laboratory procedures.
  • Experience operating microscopes, microtomes, tissue processors, embedding equipment, and other histology instruments.
  • Ability to gross, process, embed, section, and stain surgical and biopsy specimens accurately.
  • Ability to perform routine and special histologic procedures in accordance with established protocols.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to monitor work for accuracy, quality, and completeness.
  • Ability to identify technical issues and take appropriate corrective action using established procedures.
  • Ability to adapt to variable schedules, fluctuating specimen volume, and operational demands typical of PRN assignments.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to maintain confidentiality of patient and laboratory information.

EDUCATION:

High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.

EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of three (3) years of histology experience is preferred.

Experience processing surgical and biopsy specimens in a clinical or outpatient setting is preferred.

PRN, per diem, or contract experience is preferred.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:

ASCP - American Society of Clinical Pathology Medical Technologist required.

  • Prepare tissue specimens for routine and special procedures that support diagnostic review.
  • Gross, process, embed, section, and stain surgical, biopsy, and anatomical tissue specimens.
  • Prepare slides for light, fluorescent, and other microscopic examination as required.
  • Perform routine and complex histologic procedures in accordance with established laboratory protocols.
  • Review specimen and process information for accuracy and completeness before testing or slide preparation.
  • Identify technical or quality concerns and take corrective action within established procedures.
  • Operate, clean, and maintain microscopes, microtomes, tissue processors, and other laboratory equipment.
  • Record specimen, processing, staining, and quality-control information accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Follow established safety, infection control, confidentiality, quality, and regulatory standards.
  • Support laboratory workflow based on specimen volume, outpatient procedural schedules, and operational needs.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned based on operational needs.
